Until the local dump site issue is settled, the federal government won't con- sider funding an extension of the Huronia Airport runway. The dump site proposed by the North Simcoe Waste Management Association, Site 41 in south Tiny Township, is in the flight path of planes using the airport. The federal govern- ment's position is that gulls foraging at a dump in that location could be a hazard for aircraft, Airport Com- mission chairperson Peter Kramp says. The Pauze dump, which was open for many years east of Perkinsfield, is closer to the airport than Site 41. Seagulls never were a problem, Kramp said. The cost of stretching the runway to 3,999 feet from 3,000 feet is $300,000. The money won't be coming from the federal govern- ment this year, Kramp said. However, the fireworks are not the only thing skyrocketing: insurance premiums for such events are also taking off, preventing many municipalities from putting on such displays - such as Elmvale, where the Royal Canadian Legion branch used to present a popular show each year. The only North Simcoe area scene was in Coldwater, which is shown in this photo, shot over a period of at least 10 seconds (the line of light is from a passing car's headlamps). Because of conflict of in- terest legislation, a Penetanguishene coun- cillor did not vote last week on a motion declaring July and August as tieless months. Councillor Don McNee introduced the idea of tieless months in Penetanguishene several years ago. A tieless months resolution is a summer tradition. The idea is that tourists will feel more at home if they are not sur- rounded by people formal- ly dressed. Councillor Robert Klug did not participate in the vote because ties are among the kinds of clothing for sale in his clothing store. He declared a pecuniary interest. Counc. McNee sug- gested the tieless months idea to Midland town council. Midland town council regularly declares July and August as tieless months too. Penetanguishene town Conflict of interest over necktie law council has invited the town employees and the business establishments to put away the ties until Sept. 1. Midland Flight Centre, which was both a charter service and a flight school, went out of business on May 1 after six years. Having a business like the Midland Flight School at an airport is an advan- tage, Huronia Airport Commission chairperson Peter Kramp says. An at- tempt is being made to get a charter operator to come to Midland on a regular basis. The Midland Flight School had several good years thanks to a Swiss partner responsible for 20 to 30 flying students a year coming to Huronia from Europe to learn to fly, Kramp said. Airport Commission member' Al Roach, Midland's mayor, sug- gested that the possibility of Canadian Forces Base Borden using the airport for training be in- vestigated.
