CCT For the Mid-Pen soccer team Goals come in bunches by Ed Pearson Goals are coming in bunches for the Mid- Pen team these days. Last Wednesday the local kickers travelled to Gravenhurst and victimized their hosts 6-1. Dave Campbell spearheaded the attack with a brace of goals, Ramsey Khourey matched him with another pair. Dennis Moreau and Don Foster added singles. The strikers have been winning the games but the defenders have been saving them. Nick Bourdouris, in goal, has been secure behind a very steady defence. In a rare lapse the full backs became disoriented and a misunderstanding led to Bourdouris losing his shut-out. Sunday was another fruitful day for Mid- Pen as they continued in a scoring stance against Haliburton in a home game. Dave Campbell was on song again and scored a hat-trick to contribute the majority in a 5-1 win. Campbell is deadly when in possession of the ball and he is strong enough to shrug off the opposition when tackled. This was Trevor Scott's last shot at winn- ing the Junior Championship as he ceases to be a Junior this year. Scott, of Brooklea Golf and Country Club, shot a 74 to capture that title. Next in that division was Scott Bales of M.G.C.C. (76) and David Stewart of York Downs (77). Mr. Gordon McLean was on hand to pre- sent the trophies to the respective divisions. The defence was effective in holding Haliburton to a lone goal, while Mid-Pen counted five. through a throng of defenders he stroked the ball into the net on a pretty pass across the goalmouth from Jimmy Mitakidis for the most opportunistic goal of the game. Allistair Hair and Peter Achata put the result beyond doubt by registering additional goals. Haliburton are a useful side and move the ball around well but they were guilty of abysmal finishing. Their leading goal scorer, Tom Eager, added to his collection with a low drive that eluded the Mid- Pen keeper. They should have scored another when awarded a penalty but the taker missed the net. They were a match for the local side in every department but hustle. It was a good win for Mid-Pen, it is a real dog-fight at the top of the table. Haliburton are one of the contenders. Mr Eric Deininger, the noted referee, chose Dave Campbell as the man of the match. With due respect the Deininger and Camp- bell, I chose Dennis Moreau. Playing at mid- field in a sweeper line devoid of Ted Chisholm, who was injured in the last game, he was a real link between the strikers and defence. He had a hand in all the goals, feeding precision passes to the forwards and breaking up Haliburton attacks before they gained momentum. In previous games, he has shown a tendency to "disappear"' he was in this game for ninety minutes.
