Soccermania strikes Midland by Ed Pearson You couldn't kick about the enthusiasm shown by the "'feetball'" fanatics in last Saturday's Interna- tional Soccer extravagna at Midland Secondary School. The adult compo- nent to the arrangements seem to have acted more honorably than is usual in these affairs, all the kids looked about the age they were supposed to be. There were two age groups, 7, 10 - 12. The Canandaigua nip- pers in the younger category showing surpris- ing maturity both in ball skills and positional play. Their coach, Steve Janc- cok, told me that his team plays regularly together in an eight team park league, which was reflected in their play. The well coach- ed aggregation made some clever moves for players of such tender years. They were good value for their victories. 2-1 in the first 2-0 in the second. Nate Herenden scored twice in the first encounter. Jeremy Schorr got both goals in the second. I was also impressed with the Midland nippers. What they lacked in finesse, they made up in desire. They were full of running and chased the ball relentlessly. Carol Coutts and Judy Thomas, the soccer sultans in these parts, decreed that all the nippers who wanted to play would be afforded the opportunity. Great for the kids, calamitous for the coaches. Garratt Houver and Len Linker coped manfully with the changes. Lee Marion scored the lone goal for Midland ona through ball that he ran on to and slipped past the ad- vancing keeper. A special word of. praise for the Midland keepers, Andrew Donald, Steve Myers and Peter Boyce. They shared the responsibility of protec- ting an oversized net against a squad of Canan- daigua sharpshooters. They did well to keep the score down. Dean Werner was also robust on defence. ma Me Air Fishin The seniors (10-12) was played at a very advanced level. Both teams worked the ball well, Midland's passing and positional play was superior. They ran in- to spaces with intelligence, their running for the ball created opportunities that resulted in goals. Canan- daigua had some good shots on goal but excellent keeping by Joe Rooney earned him a shut-out. Ar- ron Coutts was top marksman for Midland with five goals, a hat trick in the first. Adam Krenis netted two, Ryan Aspinall and Shawn Crawford scored singles. The scores 3-0 in the first and 4-0 in the second, both wins for Midland, did not really in- dicate the closeness of the game. Play was end to end and the teams were well matched. I am sure that reams will be written about the benefit of the Midland- Canandaigua Games and I agree with it all. It was a joy to me to see soccer played as it was when I was a lad, before all the dir- ty stuff crept in. My com- pliments to all who helped to make it possible. Dry Wall edges Vasey In Georgian Bay Women's Softball League action last week, Penetanguishene's Gerard's Dry Wall edged Vasey 8-5. Vasey took a 1-0 lead in the first, but Penetang replied with three in the se- cond. The visitor's knotted the count in the fourth on- ly to have Penetang take a 5-3 lead in the bottom of the frame and add to it with three in the fifth. Vasey plated a pair in the sixth to make the score close. Vasey's Sharon Barrows allowed eight runs on nine base hits, walked two and struck out a pair. Barrows also went 3-3 at the plate, scoring once and knocking in a run. At Molson Park on Sunday, there was a new type of sport fishing. Approximately 50 hot air balloons from all over North America and Great Britain gathered in Barrie for the $25,000 prize catch. The balloons lifted off from area schools in an attempt to be over Molson Goalward Bound Dave Campbell, Mid-Pen Soccer team striker, scored a hat trick Sunday against Haliburton at Penetanguishene Secon- dary School field. Campbell was the key striker in the important contest that put Cindy King pitched five and a third innings for Penetang giving up three runs on five base hits, walking three and striking out four. Heather Higgs finished up and issued three free passes leading to a pair of runs. Cindy King helped her own cause with a single and double in two trips to the plate, while Donna Asselin was two for three at the plate. Last Wednesday, Penetang visited Port MeNicoll leaving with a 33-1 win. The punchless and defenceless Port-team was no match for the Penetang machine. Gerard's Dry Wall counted seven times in the first and nine more in the second. They settled for three in the third before ex- ploding for 10 in the fourth and adding five more in the fifth. Penetang struck for six home runs, including a grand slam off the bat of Marg Dorion. Homers were recorded by Dorion (2), Carmen McNamara (20), Heather Higgs and Donna Asselin. Dorion, Cathy Cadieux, Ruby Degenaar, Teresa Pud- dicombe and Dorion each went 4-6 at the plate, while McNamara registered 5-6. For Penetang, Mitch Lacroix pitched three inn- ings of no hit ball, walking one and striking out five. Donna Asselin finished up with no hits, a walk and three strike outs. Park at 8:07 p.m. when helium filled balloons would be released. One was tagged for the $25,000 prize, while others were tagged with lesser awards. The big one got away as the balloonists failed to snare the big catch. Mid-Pen among the league leaders. Campbell's five goals in the last two games also puts him in contention for the league's goal scoring honors. a) ' i hten ' Mooutprnas Inc.
