pai re A TIS OT td AOE ee re Simcoe County - On a well travelled stretch of gravel road in Oro Township last week, a load of liquid calcium chloride was dumped on Fred Haughton, free of charge. Fred Haughton is the road super- visor for Oro Township. While he was attending the Good Roads Convention in Toronto this Spring he entered and won a contest General Chemical was holding - a free tanker load of liquid calcium chloride. He took possession of his prize last May 19 and, under the super- vision of Larry Postill from General Chemical, Mr. Haughton used part of it to stabilize a section of Oro Sideroad No. 5. The remainder was used as dust control on an ad- jacent section of the same road. The rest of the road was left alone. "General Chemical attends the Ontario Good Roads Convention held every Spring in Toronto," says Larry Postill, General Chemical rep for the area. "'For the griculture Update past four years, we have been do- ing some promotional work.there for stabilized roads and that in- volves giving away a free load of calcium chloride. When Fred won this year, we thought we would take advantage of the situation to show the neighboring townships what road stabilization was all about."' About 25 road supervisors from neighboring townships, as well as a couple of Councilors from Oro Township, turned up for the demonstration. Personal presenta- tions were made to Fred Haughton and runner-up Bill Newman, from Mara Township, at the new Oro Township offices on Sideroad No. 7. After that everyone adjourned to the site to watch the application of the calcium chloride. A few hundred yards in from Highway 11 on Oro Sideroad No. 5 a short stretch received a sprinkl- ing of calcium chloride for dust control. Immediately adjacent to that stretch a heavier dose was hip tri given to the stabilized section. About a mile later, another section was given the lighter, dust contro application. The section of the road to be stabilized has been first prepared by laying down some 2,000 tons of fresh gravel carefully tested to en- sure it met Ontario Ministry of Transportation and Communica- tions standards. Then it was carefully graded and shpaed to give it the proper crown. When the tanker truck came, three passes were made - one for each 12-foot lane and a third down the centre, overlapping the previous two applications. The total application of calcium chloride amounted to less than 1 per cent by weight of gravel. Finaly, a vibratory compactor was rolled over the road to pack down the gravel. "One of the reasons we wanted to stabilized this particular section of road, is because we've had pro- blems here in the past," says Fred Haughton. Even now that we've added the gravel and calcium chloride, we're looking for soft spots. If we don't have a strong base, this material would get soupy very fast when we put the vibratory On it. But so far it looks pretty good."' That's good news for Larry Postill who has been casting anx- ious glances at the weather. It has been threatening to storm, but now es calcium it is just drizzling It turns out that this is good weather for stabilizing roads with calcium chloride. The added moisture helps in the compacting of "'fines" in the road. "Fines" are the si.ai! particles that form a part of any gravel road. When they are wet, they stick to one another and to larger particles and this helps to hold everything together. Cont'd on Pg. 10 | CUSTOM ROUND BALING Baler fitted with the new plastic-wrap system. More than just an adaptation of an existing design, the Terrapro was designed from the ground up for work, and lots of it The power-take-off system is unique ta Yamaha -- its ability to drive either lawn mowers or snowblowers an industry first. The PTO's driveshaft is governed separately from vehicle speed and the specially treaded rear tires are driven by a lock-in, lock-out differential -- all features that spell convenience and make the Terrapro easy on delicate lawns Standard workhorse features like electric starting, full racks front and rear and a proven Moto-4 engine, now fan-cooled, ensure that the Terrapro is as versatile as it is useful. Terrapro -- the all-in-one machine uses for the Terrapro. On y limits the possibilities. YAMAHA We make the difference. CAN THREE SIMPLE INITIALS CHANGE YOUR LIFE? _ Maybe not, but Terrapro's unique power-take-off (PTO) system can Certainly change it for the better. Maybe you've got a half-acre lot just off the beaten path. Maybe it's a 20 acre estate well away from the turmoil of the big city. Whatever the case, there's one common denominator -- the snow has to be removed and the lawn mowed. Yamaha's PTO takes the sweat out of both these tasks. The 48" mower takes on the toughest lawns and the dual-stage blower conquers the highest drifts. The PTO driveshaft is governed independently of vehicle speed -- 2000 rpm is available from the PTO's driveshaft as low as 1.5 mph in the low gear range. A lock-in, lock-out differential and specially treaded tires make the Terrapro easy on delicate lawns. There's only one motor to operate and maintain and it is the tried and true Moto-4 powerplant, now fan-cooled, for even greater reliability The Terrapro is perfect for large scale mowing and blowing, yet is manoeuvrable enou done, it magically transforms into a versatile ATV -- ready for camping. fishing, hunting or anything else you can think of. In fact, we're sure you'll come a with many more your imagination for the tightest spots. When the day's work is PARKWAY YAMAHA J ~ -- ee 293 Pretty River Parkway, Collingwood, 445-7707.
