Judges blind? Yes, but not deaf! Fiddlers coming to Midland will compete for marks from blind -- but not deaf -- judges. An innovation at the se- cond annual, two-day, Huronia Open Fiddle and Step-Dance Contest will be blind judging. For the first time in fid- dle competition in Canada, says Carolyn White, the judges won't see or know the identity of the player whose music they are evaluating. White is optimistic that in its second year the Midland competition will draw an_ impressive number of competitors. By late July last year, three contestants had registered. Last week the total heard from for the Aug. 19 and 20 event was 35. Keeping the judges in ig- norance of the identity of the contestants as they compete is intended to remove any advantage the better known contestants might have because of their reputation on the fiddle competition circuit. The Ontario Rhythm Cloggers will entertain on Aug. 19. The Phantom IV is the band for the Aug. 20 Little tug boat Danielle Benson enjoys a miniature tug boat ride at last weekend's amusement park set up at the Mountainview Mall in Midland. Park of the parking lot was converted into a temporary carnival. evening dance. Nearly $5,000 is being of- fered in cash as prizes. The top performers will receive trophies too. Volunteers are needed during the two days for jobs such as ticket- selling and security. People in- terested in volunteering can contact the Midland Recreation Office. Reserved seats are available on a limited basis for the weekend package. The cost for tickets is $15 for adults, $10.50 for seniors and $7 for children. The 35-member group will make a historic encamp- ment outide the palisades at Sainte-Marie and will present special tactical drills using pikes and muskets. The militia is the official color guard of the Gover- nor of Maryland, William Donald Schaefer. Schaefer has sent a gubernatorial proclamation for presenta- tion at Sainte-Marie at 1 p.m., Friday. The St. Maries Citty Militia, its womenfolk and its children wear authentic 17th century garb and its arms and armor are designed with great atten- tion to historical detail. As directed in An Act for Military Discipline (1638-39), each man is responsible for providing his own arms ammunition and clothing. As a result, the militia musters in a variety of uniforms with an assortment of arms and armor. The group bears the black and gold cclors of Lord Baltimore, the first governor of Maryland. The colorful activities of the St. Maries Citty Militia at Sainte- Marie among the Hurons provide added in- sight into the living history of the 17th century. There is no added charge for Militia activities, and visitors to Sainte-Marie are encouraged to come and meet this lively group of volunteers.
