Schmidt leads slalom The Twin Lakes Motor Club held its third of six events in the Huronia Auto Slalom Series Sunday afternoon at Mountainview Mall. Rob»McLain, the winning pitcher in the opening contest, batted his team to a 6-0 vic- tory. McLain stroked a two run homer in the three run third and added a single in the sixth in going 2-3 at the plate. Vasey pitcher, Brian Fowler struck out 18 Wyebridge batters including the side in the second, fourth, fifth and seventh. Paul Rowe and Kent Goldsmith managed the only two base hits, both singles off Fowler. Three walks, two errors and a hit batsman were the only other baserunners Fowler allowed. On- ly one got as far as third. Vasey scored once in the second, three times in the third and added one more in the sixth for the victory. With one out in the second, Bob Widdes reached on an error to the pitcher and scored on Wayne King's two out triple. Blake Ed- wards reached first on an error to the second baseman to lead off the third and moved up on a passed ball. After Ken Edgar struck out, Keith Ball stroked a single scoring Edwards. Ball was out at second on Brent Gordon's fielder's choice. McLain then took charge dringing in Gordon with his round tripper. Back to back singles in the sixth from Gor- don and McLain set the stage for Jim Mills' one out sacrifice fly to right field scoring Gor- don with the fifth Vasey counter. Losing pitcher, Paul Rowe, allowed six base hits, walked no one and struck out three. Game three in the series was played last night in Wyebridge with game four schedul- ed for Thursday night in Vasey if necessary. Midland's Gunter Schmidt picked up a first place finish in Class 2 with a time of 103.65 seconds driving a Mustang. Steve McKerroll of Horseshoe Valley came second in 104.76 ; Slalom Series. Saunders finished second in a Honda Prelude in Class 6 behind John Brown who was driving a Honda Accord. while Barrie's Brain Graham finished in third spot at 104.95. Ross Kirkby of Midland, in a Honda Civic won the Class 5 event with 105.68, .30 Saunders was a mere .07 seconds behind the leader. The event had 26 competitors vying for points in three separate classes. _ series seconds ahead of Gunter Schmidt in a Volkswagen Scirocco. Tim Nicholson of Midland collected third in a Honda CRX in 107.83. Three Midlanders topped Class 6 with John Brown leading the way in a Honda Accord with 105.26. John Saunders was close behind in a Honda Prelude with 105.33. Carol Saunders (Mrs. John) streaked into third with a clocking of 110.52, also in a Honda Prelude. Schmidt leads the overall series with 300 accumulated points, followed closely by John Brown with 299.94 and John Saunders 197.98. Ross Kirkby is in fourth position with 295.65 while Steve McKerrall closes out the top five 194.55 total points. Sunday, August 21, Twin Lakes will have the use of the Barrie Speedway for the day and will host an Open Regulary run. The only criteria is to hold a valid driver's license. The participant will drive around the course at any speed desired and he will be timed. At the end of the day, the driver who has logged the closest to his original timed lap will be the winner. There will be 10-20 runs per car plus practite time allotted. The cost is $13 per car and prizes will be awarded. For further information, contact John Brown at 526-9508.
