Some "Colts"' The victors in the Provincial colts competition Lawn Bowling tournament at Stayner Sunday are from left to right lead, Bill Danial, second, Bill Baldwin and skip, John Raeburn. They were the top team of entries from Orillia, Richmond Hill, Barrie and Midland. A "Colt" is a lawn bowler under the age of 21 or with less than five years bowling experience. Midland rink on to finals by Ed Pearson As the lawn bowling season draws to a close, the Midland club is putting together rinks to enter Pro- vincial competition. The Midland greens were the venue for the Senior District 13 Mens Triples Championship last Thurs- day. For this very prestigious occasion the selection committee put together a very august rink, three senior bowlers, all Presidents of the club, one present and two past. Ray Goodenough skip, Jack Davis vice and Ken Ellis lead. Pitted against such in- timidating competition, it was not surprising that the Joe Bessie rink of Stayner should succumb to our local heroes. This put our heroes into the final against the Allandale (Bar- rie) rink which was skip- ped by no lesser person than Bill Wuerch, the 13 district chairman. The Midland rink was in top form again and emerged as champions. The win carries the Midland rink into the Pro- vincial Finals which will be played down in Brampton on September 8 and 9. If the President's rink main- tain its fine form in the Finals, they are home free. The Skip, Ray (Radar) Goodenough, who was honing on to the jack all day, gave credit to his front end, "They set me up and left me nothing to do", he said. Felt a little skittish myself on Sunday. Got nominated to skip the 'Colts' in the Provincial playdowns at Stayner. After enduring some nasty remarks about it being the "Clydesdale" class of the Colts. As it turned out, my vice and lead were also Englishmen, Les Cowdrey and John Caygill. At last we were able to discuss tactics without the opposition be- ing able to understand us. "Colts" as defined for Provincial competition, are lawn bowlers under the age of 21 or who have less than five years playing ex- perience. Both ends of the age scale were evident at Stayner. A Richmond Hill youth team had, as lead, Carmilla Zaszara, aged 12, son of well-known lawn bowler Frank Zaszara. He displayed a style that speaks volume about good coaching. Carmilla has been playing for two years and entered into many tournaments. In their first game against Orillia the lead was 78 year old Walter Cooke. Walter took up the game when he was 75 and has two more years before he can graduate from Colt to senior. Experience told in the game and the older rink won the game but it was heartening to see such a fine young team in action. No sign of a generation gap there, the two teams were very compatable. It is uni- que to lawn bowling that two players 66 years apart in age can meet together in competition and sport... Six teams met in com- petition for the opportuni- ty to play, three from Orillia, and teams from Barrie, Richmond Hill, and Midland. Midland was drawn against Orillia in the last game after one loss. We were leading 10-6 at the last end when we fall from grace and lost the last end by four bowls. That put us out because our opponents had a win under their belts. It was the Orillia rink of John Raeburn, skip, Bill Baldwin, second, and Bill Daniel who scuppered us, they went on to win the finals against the Bob Beckett rink, also of Orillia. It was good fun and the ex- perience will be useful. We appreciated the support from the Goodenough's and the Pypher's who motored down to en- courage and advise us.
