The money will be used to expand the number of staff who operate the service. According to Steve Laurin, the owner and operator of the MDAS, the annual operating budget of the service is '"'over $600,000." By early fall, three staff- ed ambulances will be available at the Midland ambulance station during weekdays, two in the even- ing and one at night. On weekends, there will be two ambulances .duing the day and evening and one at night. Two new attendant- drivers will be hired. The MDAS operates with three vehicles and 21 full-time staff. Laurin says that's an adequate number of both vehicles and people to properly service an area of this size. Black said the funding represented the provincial government's concern for health-care in rural areas.
