Sliding rocks a mere 138 feet, less if you want it on the button, is child's play, especially on our fast ice at the Penetanguishene Curling Club. Last year, our 286 members did it daily for twenty seven weeks. All that fun will be returning in just four short weeks. Ice Technician Bill Howard will start making ice on October 1st, and hopefully (without any major problems reported by ice plant fixer Connie Maloney) all six sheets will be ready for action on October 15th. The first rock will be officially thrown on Monday, October 17, during our practice week-open house. That week will give the new curlers a chance to participate in our free instructional clinics, and allow all other curlers the oppor- tunity to get out and throw some rocks. We would appreciate that no games are played on those even- ings, unless it is later on in the night, and there's no one waiting to get on. Be courteous! Following the practice week, all schedules will be starting. The Men's House League, sponsored CNS curling booth On August 30th Russ Howard and David Gravelle travelled by Marcelville will be on Monday evenings. Tuesday will be the new Ladies' night, with the first schedule sponsored by Edward Lacroix Contracting Ltd. Plans are in the works to get the Seniors and Industrial League going on Wednesday. Thursday will see the ever popular Men's Competitive and Fri- day the return of the Social Mixed League. On this first night a Hallowe'en party will take place. Posters and more information will be forthcoming as to costumes, etc. The first Friday schedule is sponsored by Gervan and Associates Insurance. So get ready, all the action is just a month away!! ice tectinicians, and officials, as well as promoting the game. to the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto to man the Ontario Curling Federation's booth. Pictured here with Russ and David, is Doug Maxwell, former CBC broadcaster, and organizer of the Silver Broom. Doug is now the Executive Director of the Ontario Curling Federation, a body in charge of the technical aspects of the sport ... teaching instructors, The booth saw a number of visitors, strangely enough many Americans, ask questions about our sport, and many en- quired about to join clubs. That's good news as many curl- ing clubs across Ontario are in dire need of members to stay alive. 1988-89 calendar now available The Penetanguishene Curling Club annual calendar is now available. As you may notice when you pick it up, the calendar of ac- tivities has been expanded this year. It includes more spaces for advertisers and a new head ex- hibiting our two club logos. Please keep the calendar handy to plan your social schedule for the next eight months. The dates are subject to change, and more ac- tivities may be added on. Don't worry -- we'll publicize any updates well ahead of time. A Team Howard angle brush can be used for many things, including curling! However, when there's no ice around the next best thing is to balance the broom on your nose. Try it, you'll like it! Here, Andrew Fletcher, a summer student hired by the Ontario Curling Federation to run it's C.N.E. booth passed the time by balancing the heavy broom on the bridge of his nose. His antics attracted the attention of a CITY-TV cameraman who photographed Andrew and used him as part of his story on sports at the C.N.E. The question is, can he do it blind- folded, while drinking a glass of water? Now, that would be a trick!
