Both team awards won Six cross-country run- ners from Midland public schools combined to win both the boys and girls top team award in a Toronto meet on the weekend. The first race of the day at the city's Earl Bales Park featured the Mite Girls Division (age 8 and under). The race went over a former golf course with gently rolling terrain and through portions of a nature trail. Three Huron Park girls ran a competitive race but were outgunned at the finish line. The winning time for that one kilometer race was one second better than Huron Park student Robyn Craig's second- place time of four minutes, 58 seconds. Teammate Kerry Graham took the bronze with an even five minutes while Suzie Barber finished fourth, just four seconds slower. Their combined scores gave them the top team award. Brent and Kevin Lunnie of Parkview burned the course for 11- and 12-year- old boys, finishing first and second. The Lunnies led throughout the race, establishing a pace that progressively widened the gap. Kevin's winning time of 7:38 earned him the gold medallion while Brent was on his heels, two seconds back -- good enough for silver. The Lunnies' perfor- mance, along with the eighth place finish of Huron Park's Duncan Barber, earned them the top team award. Cross-country running begins here next Wednes- day with the running of the Sixth Annual Huron Park Invitational. The host school will be hard-pressed to retain the awards it won last year in both the team category and elite division. Strong com- petition "is expected previous winners Waubaushene and Parkview as well as the perennial powerhouse, Monsignor Castex. The 13 area schools will challenge each other over a two-kilometer course beginning and ending behind the school. The juniors (10 and under) start at 4 p.m. and the intermediates 20 minutes later. The seniors take off at 4:40 p.m. The awards will be presented after the last race, approximately 5:10 p.m. Friday will be the rain date. a ee ae Oe ae Reaching for it Basketball is played with determination by Midland Secondary School and Ecole Secon- daire Penetanguishene Secondary School.
