Labor helps McMurter The New Democratic Party candidate for Simcoe North left Midland Sept. 28 with a $1,000 contributon from the Midland District Labour Council. Mike McMurter asked the council for money and for campaign workers. He spoke and answered questions on free trade, senior citizens' pensions, the environment, acid rain, PCBs, daycare and affor- dable housing. Free trade, he said, has "a ring of gutting labor." Of the Canada-U.S. acid rain agreement, he said, "It's a treaty of let's not do anything." Speaking of recent an- nouncements by _ the federal government, McMurter said, "I don't understand why the Tories are suddenly concerned about people. There must be an election." Safe thwarts thieves A bank and restaurant in Victoria Harbour were broken into overnight Sept. 21 and 22. The Canadian Imperial Bank of Commerce was entered through its roof. An attempt was made to pry open the safe. Nothing was taken. As well, a window of the Pizza Corral restaurant was broken. Ten cartons of cigarettes and a radio, worth a total of $510, were taken. Both break-ins are being investigated by Midland OPP Constable Robert Giles and the Barrie OPP technical investigation unit.
