Patrick Rivard, 18, from Montreal, learned not to fear becoming in- volved, to take part in group discussions. The young men are liv- ing in Midland and doing volunteer social work as members of a larger group brought together by a non-profit Canadian organization called Canada World Youth. Their longer-than-two- month stay in Midland ends Nov. 23. On Dec. 4 the group of paired Canadians and Uruguayans leaves for Home away Pablo Bielli, sitting on front of Jennifer Charlebois, and Patrick Rivard, in the chair with Jen- nifer's brother, Jeff, are two members of the Canada World Uruguay for a similar number of weeks living and working in that country. They will live in Pando, an agricultural centre of 20,000 people one hour's drive from the city of Montevideo, in time for the South American country's summer. Strange is the operative word in describing the Canada World Youth experience. Patrick said he came to a community he didn't know -- Midland - paired with a person he didn't know - Pablo - to live with a family he had never met. He has made a decision about his future because from home the floor in Youth Ex- -- Canada more complex than visitors expected of his Canada World Youth experience, although the exchange is not half finished. He brought to the ex- change a year's education in science. He has decid- ed he wants to have a career in social service. Pablo has discovered that Canada is composed of a multitude of cultures. He also noticed that Canadians watch a lot of U.S. television programs and movies. Canadians, unlike Uruguayans, are punc- tual. When they say they will be somewhere at a particular time, they are there, Pablo said. change group living with host families in Midand and learning about each other's cultures.
