YMCA offers new programs for disabled The Midland YMCA is offering a new program aimed at people suffering from lack of mobility. The program's main objective is to reach those who have to cope with the difficulties of decreas- ed mobility on a daily basis. The lack of. mobility may have been caused by a stroke, being arthritic, motor vehicle accident, etc: The program has been designed by local profes- sionals from the medical and related fields, with input from successful programs in_ other Huronia areas. The program will offer bi-weekly sessions of gen- tle gym and pool exer- cises aimed at improving muscle strength and en- durance as well as joint flexibility for those who can benefit most from such a program. The 30-minute gym ses- sion consists of movements to loosen and limber while seated on Open books, Y told -- Midland's finance com- mittee wants to see the Midland YMCA's 1988 financial statement and a current budget. Until the committee has current financial details, it is reserving discussion of a YMCA re- quest for money. Committee member Councillor George Mac- chairs, then an equal amount of time in the pool is scheduled. The changing areas have special shower ben- ches and toilet facilities. The pool is equipped with a lift for easy access to. the water. Pool temperature will be 80 degrees F for ease of movement and comfort. Participants are en- couraged to bring a friend or assistant (at no charge to that person) to give-a hand if required. Program directors re- quire participants obtain a signed permission from a doctor. The program runs from Jan. 16-Feb. 23 at the Midland YMCA on Mon- days and Thursdays from 1-2515"p-m- Cost will be between $36-$46 depending on the number of registrants. For information con- tact Judy Thomas at 549-7442, ext. 232 or Cathie Leitch at 526-9351 in the afternoon. Donald's impression is that the YMCA is on the verge of being financial- ly out of control, after ex- amining a 1987 financial statement. The YMCA annually asks the town council for money. The municipality donated the land in Little Lake Park on which the YMCA was built. y re Pe ai eet aD ~~ -- wo 4 4 Lo ms fA --- a --" A 7.0 0) Se = DD
