Winterfest, a record set fun! The Fourth Annual Midland Winterfest once again set records for par- ticipation with more than 8,600 people taking part in the activities. Some of the major drawing cards were the Montreal Old _ Pros hockey game which drew a crowd in excess of 900. The tours of the Griffon as well drew more than 900 people. More than 1,000 saw the various displays at the Civic Center while ap- proximately 500 watched the figure skating show Sunday afternoon at Centennial Arena. The bridge tournament was won by David Vinegar and Wendy Har- ris with Frances Whale and Peter Skelton claim- ing the runner-up position. In the shuffleboard tournament, the team of Don Argue and Betty Stacey emerged as cham- pions, edging Jenny Palmer and _ Loretta Wilson. The team of Sadie Jones and Elwood Langman captured con- solation honors, defeating Lynn Leach and Cecil Bailey. Darrell Gibbons won the best snowman contest with the Crawfords claiming second prize and Judy Bodnarchuk third. The staff defeated the Grade 13 students at Midland Secondary School 54-44 in basketball with Chester Graham hit- ting for 12 points and An- dy Wicksted 8 for the staff. Andy Robinson hooped six points for the students. In the Alumni game, the senior boys emerged with a 67-58 victory. Scott Bales led the boys with 22 points while Steve Kirdeikis added 12. John Farragher netted 14 points for the Alumni and Kevin Gray in eight. The Over-35 Snooker tournament had 20 par- ticipants with Dave Fralick and Jim Lethbridge emerging as winners of the "B"' side and the overall winners as well. Jerry Pezick and Dwayne Mason claimed top spot on the *'A"' side while Mason recorded the highest score of the tourney. Tom Arnett won the adult division of the chess tourney with Ron Siesl- ing second. Edward Tuck claimed the secondary school division while Joe Car- Chess nuts Round and round we go The figure skating show involved many local boys and girls, who all form- ed together to give an outstanding performance Sunday in Midland's riere placed second. In the elementary school category, Peter Ferris took top honors over Greg Devillers. John Edwards won the Midland YMCA racquet- ball while Dave Lamb won the consolation side. Janice Evans and Ruby Degenaar were tops on the ladies' side. Volleyball drew 40 par- ticipants with Sheila Lizotte's team taking first place and Janice Evan's squad placed second. The Wye Marsh was a busy place with 100 parents and toddlers en- joying a winter morning and 75 people in atten- dance for the Festival Talent Search. More than 300 Saturday and Sunday participated in cross country skiing and snowshoeing. The gymnastics show and martial arts demonstration both at- tracted crowds in excess of 100. Other popular events the horse and wagon rides, pancake breakfast, Tanglefoot concert at Ste. Marie, dance at Midland Legion, free skating at Centennial Arena, swimming at the YMCA, and the first an- nual chili lunch. The dart and euchre were tournaments at the Legion had large turnouts.
