This was It was close, but the Midland by David Gravelle Russ Howard and his Penetanguishene Curling Club rink have to be considered On- tario's dominant team of the late 1980's. This past weekend they earned that measure of respect by upending the force of the early 1980's to win their third provincial championship in four years. When Russ Howard and his STONELEIGH MOTORS rink of Glenn Howard, Tim Belcourt, and Kent Carstairs, meet Ed Werenich of Avonlea on any given sheet of curling ice, you know there's going to be of- fense. It's like Wayne Gretzky and his team facing Mario bother showing up! Howard, and his team of walking wounded, thanks to the flu bug, decided prior to Sun- day's final against Werenich, they would bring out the big guns and go after "'The Wrench', John Kawaja, lan Tetley, and Pat Perraud. Beat them at their own game was the plan. It was a big gamble to take, because Werenich has destroyed lesser teams in the past when the've tried to monkey with 'The Wrench."' But, on this day, Team Howard executed the finess shots from lead to skip position, and made the big ones when they counted. The 8-5 win gave the guys their fourth Blue Light Tankard dating back to 1980 when Bob Ruston and Larry Merkley were on the team. Werenich nosed a raise takeout giving Howard a 2-1 lead. Werenich tied it up in the fourth. The first deuce of the game came in the fifth as Howard made a dramatic angle raise takeout, similar to the one he completed in the final game of the TSN Skins game to win $3600. That gave the P.C.C. team a 4-2 lead. In the sixth and seventh, they traded singles bringing Lemieux. That soon became 8-3 as Glenn Howard made a beautiful tap back takeout. Russ followed that with a tap back of his own to lie two. "The Wrench,"' who was forced into a hitting game by the STONELEIGH MOTORS rink, nosed it giving Howard a steal of three and an 8-3 lead. It finished up 8-5, giving a tired team, a squawky voiced skip, and a pair of ailing curlers, another Ontario Championship. The Labatt Brier is set for Saskatoon for March 5-12.
