Penetanguishene Curling Club News with Ed Pearson The Penetanguishene Curl- ing Club was the scene Jan. 23-24 of the Ontario Ladies' Zone 10 Diamond Seniors playdowns. Pauline Babando and her curling cohorts of Kay Lapere, Bernice Loughran, and Betty Pearson decided that as host club, they should enter a team. So, more in hope than ex- pectation, they entered the fray. Just as well they did. On the day, only Gravenhurst and ONIN TET ee ET J Between the sheets with Ed Pearson Diamond ladies sparkle Parry Sound poured in to con- test the playdowns. It was a double knockout event with the lone survivor going on to the regionals in Niagara Falls. The Penetanguishene rink curled with occasional bursts of brilliance, and prolonged bouts of commonplacitity. They went down in flames on the first day, losing to Gravenhurst 8-5 and to Parry Sound 9-4. Parry Sound and Gravenhurst were pitted against each other on the se- cond day. Russ Howard, who was an interested curler on both days was impressed. "l would be happy if | can curl like that when I'm their age," he commented to me. The Parry Sound rink of Magnificent Murray Murray Dubeau fires out of the hack to deliver his first skip stone in a recent bonspiel. What style! What grace! What sportsmanship! As you can tell by the score Murray is attempting to make a valiant comeback. But, it looks like his heroics may just be too late! Good try anyways, Murray! Joen Huff, Lois Moore, Norma Taylor, and Marion Ferguson won both their games against Gravenhurst's Ruby Allan, 9-5 and 10-4 to advance to the next stage of competition. Thanks to all the ladies, you gave us a Clinic! Anderson by Joan Gregoire The Penetang-Midland Coach Lines Bonspiel was held on January 10, 1989. Many thanks from the Ladies' Curling Club to P.M.C.L. for sponsoring this event. LADIES' IGA CHAMPS The winner of the second schedule of ladies' curling was the rink skipped by Joan Maurice, with Laurine Moreau at vice, Heather St. Amant at second, and Jacqueline Kirkley at lead. Joan Bourrie's team was runner-up. It consisted of Joan Bourrie at skip, vice Charlotte Fournier, Marg Atkinson at se- cond, and lead Betty Ruston. The final game was tied after ten ends. One more end made Joan Bourrie the winner on her last shot. It was a very exciting game to watch. Congratulations to both teams and many thanks to Gerry Light and the 1.G.A. for sponsoring this schedule. SOLCA INTERMEDIATES The rink of Diane Ruston, Joan Gregoire, Marita King, and Jackie Gyte will be heading to the Zone Champion- ships for the SOLCA In- termediates (over 40) competi- tion, February 21-23. Good luck in Thornhill! Pete challenges you to beat him on Friday From page 13 FOURTH - Larry Duffy with 69 points. FIFTH - Al McClinton with 64 points. SIXTH - (three way tie) Rick Moreau, Len Cleland, and Jim Armstrong with 58 points. ~ NINTH - Jerry Baker with 56.5 points. TENTH - Norbert Desroches with 55.5 points. Last but not least was ... Jim Radecki. The third schedule, which is sponsored by Perkinsfield Rustic Furniture, has a few changes. Because so many of our rich curlers have decided to travel south rather then curl the third schedule, the numbers have decreased enough to have two draws Glenn & selected An under-the-weather Kent Carstairs was chosen as the all star lead in the Labatt Blue Light Tankard held last week at the Dunc MacDonald Memorial Community Gardens in Trenton. lan Tetley of the Ed Werenich rink was the all star second, while Glenn Howard was named as the all star third, Dave Merklinger of Ottawa Navy was named all star skip. Nearly 10,000 people jamm- ed the arena during the week- rather than three. The games will now be eight ends starting at 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. There are 28 teams which means every team (but four) will receive a bye. These four teams play each other the last week of the schedule, so the score that week won't count in the overall total. PETE'S FINAL PREDICTIONS Since my prediction in the second schedule was only good for the winning team, | won't try to pick the second and third place teams this time. Instead, | predict that my team which consists of my wife Marie, and Pam and Paul Jagos will win the third schedule. | challenge all the people we curl against to prove me wrong!!! Kent all-stars long event to observe and en- joy some of the best curling to be seen anywhere. There was a strong con- tingent from the Elmvale, Penetanguishene and Midland areas. The crowd seemed to favor Howard in most games although former Trentonian, Dave Merklinger, was the No. 1 attraction. What pleased the throng most was the great play of the curlers and the general sport- smanship displayed.
