~ ote a Midland Secondary School was the scene on the weekend of the Area III elementary school boys basketball championships. Midland's Bayview School nipped Huron Park 58-55 in the final while St. Joseph's of Penetang downed James Keating 56-24 to win the consolation side. Bayview and Huron Park will represent the area in the Simcoe County finals. The Annual Participac- tion Challenge will take place this year May 31 featuring a new challenger. Midland's sister city, Canandaigua, N.Y. will be our opposition. It will add a lot of in- terest to this year's event as each community will attempt to prove they are the most fit and active. All that is involved is 15 minutes of physical ac- tivity May 31. Schools, businesses, in- dustries, groups and in- dividuals can plan events and participate in this fun-filled day and help us show our southern neighbours that Cana- dians are physically ac- tive. New challenge for Midland KKK The Midland Minor Soccer meeting will be held tomorrow (Thurs- day) 7:30 p.m. in the Midland Civic Center. All interested parents and volunteers are invited to attend this important meeting which will deal with the 1989 soccer pro- gram and the Interna- tional Friendship Games. * KK Camp Simpresca is a summer camp for boys and girls which is owned and operated by the Sim- coe Presbytery of the United Church of Canada. They are now accepting registrations . for the seven weeks of camp. For further infor- mation, call Gary Price at 526-7714. KKK The County of Simcoe Recreation and Special Services Department has a number of their annual tournaments ready in late March and early April. Pre-registration is necessary. The cribbage tourna- ment is slated for March 30 at The Place in Balm Beach while the bid euchre tourney will be in New Lowell March 31. The "A" five-pin bowling is scheduled April 7 while the "B" tourna- ment will be held April 10, both at Kempview Bowl in Barrie. The bridge tournament is at the Coldwater Legion April 17 and the dart tournament goes April 24 in Barrie. Wilicers Sports Bar clinched at least a tie for first place in the Penetang Recreational Hockey League with a 9-6 win Sunday over Penetang Quality Home Products. The loss also eliminated Penetang Pro- ducts from playoff action. John O'Hara, Dave Robillard, John Walters and Bill Mundy each fired a pair of goals in the win while Frank Hall counted one. Pat Brodeur scored twice for Penetang Products with single from Mike Smith, Gary Duval, Jamie Elmvale topples Ind Elmvale's Hapamp bantams defeated Midland Indusmin ma- jors last Friday night in what began as an ex- cellent hockey game. Un- fortunately it ended in a slug fest and was called at the 5:32 mark of the final period with Elmvale leading 6-3. David Chambers open- ed the scoring when he slammed home a center- ing pass from the corner by Paul Turner with Joe Vanlarrhoven also earn- ing an assist. Minutes later Turner beat the Midland goalie on an identical play from the opposite corner, this time from Chambers and Mark Elliott. Doug Beard- sall then finished off an exciting first period when he picked the corner ona pass from Jess Bywater, giving his team a 3-0 lead. Elliott stretched Elmvale's lead to 4-0 in the second when he let loose a slap shot that went through the goalie's pads. Setting: up the goal with some nice passing were Mike Hales and Gerald Martin. Midland notched its first goal at the midway mark of the second period but 40 seconds Robitaille and Brian St. Amant. Therrien's Furniture saw any hope they had of taking over first place dashed in a 3 - 3 tie with Hindson Marine, Terry King, Terry Pilon and Glen Hirlehey accounted for Therrien's scoring usmin later, Bywater and Elliott combed to make it 5-1. ft ended the scoring in the second period and to that point, fans had wat- ched two periods of ex- cellent hockey. Huronia Optical (9-11-3), Hindson Marine (6-13-4) and Alex's Service Center (5-18-0) are fighting for the last two playoff spots. Penetang Products brings up the rear with five wins and no ties in 23 contests. Therrien's Brian Pilon has a lock on the scoring derby with 31 goals and 36 assists, 13 points ahead of Dave Robillard (22-32) and John O'Hara (18-36) both of G. Wilicers. Huronia Op- tical's Daryl Belcourt (21-23) and Dave Genier of G.
