Penetang and Midland hockey fans were treated to a barn burner at the Penetang arena Saturday. Penetang Central Marine and Midland French Dry Cleaners met in the fifth and finale of the best of five Georgian Bay Minor Hockey Associa- tion semifinal series. The series was tied at two games and A pair of Penetanguishene Central Marine Atoms charge up the ice with the puck in Georgian Bay semi-final playoff action Saturday. The game was a wild and woolly taking three more periods did little to decide a winner. After regulation time, the teams were tied 6-6. After an extra ses- sion the teams were again tied 8-8. Then another overtime frame, and another and another. Finally, the puck trickled across the Midland goalline giving the Penetang Atoms a 9-8 victory. Charge Cleaners. Penetang Atoms win marathon Midland took a 3-0 lead in the open- ing frame on a hat trick from Joe Rooney in a three minute span. Then Penetang got untracked as Ryan Aspin- wall netted his first of three at 6:26. Brian Moreau and Paul Beauchamp evened the count for Penetang before Brad Dorion regained the lead for Midland in the middle frame. Beauchamp drew Penetang even again four overtime periods to decide a winner. Penetang prevailed with a 9-8 win over Midland French Dry to die as Lee Marion scored nine * seconds left on the clock to create " through two five minute sudden death before the period ended. The teams traded goals in the third as Moreau and Beauchamp clicked for the home side while Rooney and Greg Spiker replied for Midland. Spiker's goal came with two minutes and 21 seconds left to play in regulation time. In the 10 minute overtime session, Beauchamp connected for his fourth of the contest at the 6:29 mark for a one goal Penetang lead. With 35 seconds left to play, Penetang score again as Ryan Aspinwall made the count 8-6. However, the Midland team refused seconds later and again with seven another overtime period. : Both teams dragged themselves periods. In the fourth overtime frame, Midland's Joe Rooney picked up the puck along the boards in the Penetang zone and skated behind the net. He im- mediately stopped as the -goaltender swung the other way, came back and . tried to wrap the puck around the net and across the goalline. But the puck refused to enter the net and Penetang came up with possession. Aspinwall motored down the left side and cut toward the net, letting go a drive from the top of the circle that eluded Joe McGill in the Midland net for the winner. Penetang faces Collingwood for the league championship. The first game of the series was scheduled for tonight (Wednesday) at a site and time that weren't available at press time. G. Wilicers bounces into title It was shootout time in the Penetang arena during the weekend. G. Wilicers Sports Bar and Therrien's Furniture loaded their weapons and went at it in the best of three Penetanguishene Recreational Hockey League champion- ship final: G. Wilicers won the first and third games to capture the 1989 league title. G. Wilicers ran up a 5-0 count Thursday Winners night before Therrien's got on the board at 6:32 of the second period. The puck was bouncing G. Wilicer's way all night with Therrien's getting few breaks. John Walters banged in three counters for the victors while Dave Robillard add- ed a pair. Therrien's turned the tide Friday night by jumping out to a 5-0 lead before G. Wilicers finally solved Bryan Lethbridge in the Therrien net at the final buzzer. Buttineau scored twice for Therriens who led 2-0 after one period and 3-0 after two. Brian Pilon, Dave Lefaive and Terry King registered singles. Robillard answered for G. Wilicers. i Saturday night was G. Wilicers turn again to get the bouncing puck. It led 5-1 _with five minutes to play. Therrien's Terry Pilon to scored at 4:57 and Brian Pilon add- ed another with just eight seconds left for the final 5-3 score in G. Wilicer's favor. Walters netted a hat trick while linemates, Dave Robillard and Dave Genier each added a single counter in the win. Wilicers won the opener Thursday night 9-1, but lost 5-1 Friday before capping the' season with a 5-3 triumph Saturday.
