They have wrested four constituencies from the Grits since the last session of Parliament, and have de- fended several seats that had been attacked upon one pretence or another. Among these may be mentioned the seat of Sir John, at Kingston; that of Sir Charles Tupper; of the Postmaster-General; of Mr. Porter, in Huron, and some others. At no one point have the Grits gained any advantage, though it had been freely fore- told that the long-anticipated " reaction " was about to set in. Thus when Parlia- ment next meets it will be found that the Administration is stronger by no less than eight votes on test questions than it was last June. To those who seo in the Con- servative party. the best guarantee of Canadian progres and security, such a condition wili be felt to be most satisfactory, The people at large do not care to venture upon new conditions that would inevitably jeopardize the existence of separate " nationality," present administrators of affairs, to stand between them and dangerous charges, for the sake éf-change.----The-derices.-of. the have sot attracted the "good opinion of the people, who have witnessed their efforts to obtain office at the sacrifice of any-of the principles thay bad been in the habit of professing with supreme dis- favor.
