The importation of high class stallions almost ceased and the trade became geverally demoralized. and the past year has seen a large num- of pure bred stallicay for breeding| . The draft horse is undoubt- edly the most satisfactory type for the paverage farmer to breed. Good heavy horses weighing from 1,500 ibs upwards and of good quality are likely to meet with a ready stle for some time to come. Such horses are tractable and easily broken and while awaiting sale can be readily used fur any sort of farm work, thus paying for their keep which the fancy hors¢s rarely do. To produce horses at a profit it is highly desirable thatthe best class Of *| registered stallions be used. In order to facilitate the selection of such stal- lions; arrangements have been made for a show of heavy draft horses at Toron- to in February of each year, so that private breeders as well as stallion syn- dicates and other associations may have ample time to make their selec- tions for the ensuing season. DISTRICT AUCTION SALES, In many districts of Great Britain auction sales of live steck have been held annually for years, Large numbers of pure bred animals for breeding pur- poses have been marketed in this way, besides many "store" cattle and other animals. Iu several provinces of the Doriinion, provincial sales of this kind have been established with sat*sfactory results, and have created a feeling in favor of county or district saies, 'There are hundreds of farmers throughout good breeding males,.and perhaps a few females. Many of these meu uo- derstand the principles of stock breed- wo ing, and have from timeto time bred 7! noted show yard specimens. Yet the progress and profits of these men has been greatly hampered because of their promptly. In some years they have been abie to sell ; in other years they have had to keep a number of animals longer than their means warranted. On the other hand many farmers desire to obtain. suitable breeding males, but du not know where to obtain what they require at a reasonable price. 'Cne cost of travelling from place to place in seurch of suitable animals deters: them from purchasing at all. With the idea of bringing buyers and sellers into touch with each other, a number of pure bre? cattle in Durham, Northumberland and adjacent counties formed the "Central Ontario Pure Bred Stock Association,'aud started series of annual auction sales. Their initial sale was fairly satisfactory and they are now arranging for their second sale, which {gs to take place at Campbellcroft on Mareh 18th next, with J. W. Martyn of Canton as President and W. B Campbell of Campbelicroft as Secretary of the association. There are many other counties and districts which would find it beneficial to inangurate sales of this kind, and as a guide to breeders interested in the During the past two or three years) 'business has been gradually reviving} 4 NK ANTS rea ese nor Mineral.
