I left Sydney Monday evening, atriving at Port Aux Basque, New- fouudland, next morning, coming down the line in Nova Scotia. I heard many -- disquieting about the Reid Newfoundland Rail- Way,.aud was told that the trains were so small and light that, when a storm came up, they had to stop stories no sewers, No pavements; cows, sheep, pigs, goats, ducks aud geese roain the streets, which are narrow and crooked. About two days, after leaving Sydney, I arrived at St. Johns. St. Jolins 30,000 people, almost ail descend- ants of the British Isles--English, | Irish, Scotch--and as St., Johns is about as near Eugland as the main- land of Canada, the city is a mix- | ture between European and Ameri- | can methods, and only partly mod- ern. The trafic on the streets, which all moves along the left hand | side of the road, is mostly one- and chain the-cars to the track for | fear they would blow over.
