THE MIRROR Communication Mr. Fietcher Johnston, Editor The Mirror: Dear Sir,--In a recent issue of your \ valuable periodical you devoted a por- tion of the title page to the attitude your publication takes towards articles contributed by the public or their representatives. The -- senti- ments voiced were very laudable, if they are correctly stated as the prin- ciples you uphold. m4 The attached document is a copy of a letter to the Beacon-Herald A. R. Mosher, Grand President of the ©. B. R. E., the duly elected repre- : sentative of some 25,000 Canadian Railway workers of which the Beacon- Herald refused publication. If you do not care to publish this jJetter from Mr. Mosher, please return same to me, stating the reason of your objections. On the other hand you may publish this letter as well in order to exonerate you from any re- - sponsibility that might otherwise be placed upon you by any of our "pub- -lie-spirited" citizens. Yours very truly, A. G. OSBORNE. Stratford, Ont., April 13 Secretary GRAND DIVISION CANADIAN BROTHERHOOD OF RAILROAD EMPLOYEES Ottawa, Ont., April 1, 1926 Dear Sir,--In your report of my ad- dress to railway workers in your city on the evening of the 26th mst., much of what I said relative to the attempt to deprive railwaymen and their wives of permanent passes on the railway --s-was omitted. I wish particularly to draw atten- tion to the fact that passes to railway - employees and their wives are a part of the compensation of such em- 'ployees for long and faithful service. If this compensation was received in extra wages the wives of the railway- men could pay for their transporta- tion to such shopping centres as they 'might desire to visit and to the same extent as they now travel on passes. it is difficult to see, therefore, how it - would benefit the merchants of Strat- ford for the railway to withdraw "passes and give the employees the equivalent im extra remuneration for their services. In other words an at- tempt to have passes withdrawn is an attempt to reduce the wages of the railroad employees. It is unfair to railwaymen and their wives to suggest that they are less patriotic citizens of the community than the merchants or the profession- al classes, some of whom have set themselves up as public spirited men. Railwaymen know that many of the wives of these self-styled public spir- ited men make frequent visits to the -centres of fashion to purchase their gowns and bonnets. They may not travel on passes issued by the railway because they render no service to the railway, but that does not help the joeal merchants to any extent. The trom' increasing number of those who are seeking to make a living out of sup- plying merchandise to working people and thew families in certain localities is undoubtedly making it difficult for some of these merchants to succeed, but it should be remembered that the overhead expense is also making it difficult for wage earners to secure their requirements on account of the increased cost that results from this competition. Much of the merchandise purchased in Toronto by residents of Stratford has » all probability been transport- ed just as far or farther from the point of production to the merchants_ in Toronto as if it had come direct to Stratford. Therefore there is not much to the argument that the rail- way is suffering a loss as a result of goods being carried home in passen- ger coaches by the wives of raiway- men. It will hardly be argued that Stratford merchants get all their sup- plies from Toronto. If less merchan- dise is being transported to Stratford as the result of the purchases being made in Toronto by the wives of the railwaymen that travel to the city on passes, then it is safe to say that more merchandise is being transport- ed to Toronto from other poimts. While it may be true that frequent- ly Stratford people pay more for the same article in Toronto thanin Strat- ferd, a close investigation whl, be- yond doubt, clearly demonstrate that on the whole there must be an advan- tage in shopping in Toronto or people would not go there to do their shop- ping. In any event if men give service to the railway and get passes for sucli service, what right has anyone to complain if these workers or their wives make purchases outside of the locality in which they live, even though the only satisfaction they get cut of it is being able to tell their friends that they got it in Toronto, New York, or any other place. Must working people, to satisfy cer- tain so-called "public-spirited" per- sons, be dictated to as to how, when, or where they shall spend the money they earn? Yours very truly, (Signed) A. R. MOSHER, President. Welfare Division No. 180, C. B R. E., Stratford, Ont., April 1, 1926.-- Editor The Mirror: Dear Sir,--The members of Wel- fure Division No. 180 would like to suggest to the "public-spirited" citi- zens of our community that when in future they desire to give the public the benefit of their exhaustive re- search on problems of this kind that they use the columns of the Stratford papers. It seems unfair to the local newspapers tohavethe Toronto "Fin- ancial Post" increasing its circulation through the news value of articles contributed by our "public-spirited" citizens. , Very truly yours, A. They are then facmg the car travelling on the same side of the pavement and coming toward them. In the above mentioned states signs are erected along the highways directing pedestrians to walk on the left side. » * * Said the sparrow to the robin, "T should really like to know Why these anxious human beings Rush about and worry so?"
