Norman T. Ives, PROMINENT PIONEER PASSES In the death of John D. Ronald, father of Mrs. W, T. Cluff, of this city, the country loses not only one of its oldest pioneers, but a man whose achievement in the business world is equalled by few of the survivors of the early industrial regime of the pro- vince. Mr. Ronald had reached the ad- vanced age of 95 years and had en- joyed the best of health until a few months before his death. He was born 'm Paisley, Scotland, and came to America at the age of 18, settling in Detroit, late moving to Chatham, where he was a partner in Hyslop and Ronald Steam Fire En- gine Works established in 1856, which manufactured every form of land and marine engine, as well as steam- boats, passenger, freight and tugs. Mr. Ronald built the first steam fire engine in Canada, a4 machine which came 'nto use in every province in the Dominion. He received medals at Philadelphia in 1876, at the World's Fair in Chicago in 1893, and a gold | medal at the Western Fair, London. He.is survived by- two daughters, Interment took James M. In Essex County near the lake one would think it was spring, as there are thousands of crows to be seen any day. No doubt this is caused more cr less by the fact that there is always a great deal of corn left in the fields, much of it being cut and stooked up which provides both food and shelter for the crows. But crows aren't the only things that crow, even when there isn't any corn in sight. Some of our neighbors must have received radios for Christmas as a great deal of our programmes since then consists of whistles and sequels, such as are caused chiefly by begin- ners. -This occurs uSually just as we are getting something real good. It is claimed that a large cod fish has been known to produce as many as nine million eggs. What a pity some scientist couldn't cross one of these fish with hens. A policeman who had arrested two Irishmen for fighting was telling the judge that he found them clutching each other and wrestling all over the road. "Its not true yer honor," said Pat.
