THE MIRROR PUBLISHED EVERY FRIDAY AT THB FLETCHER JOHNSTON PRESS, 123 ON- TARIO ST., STRATFORD. PHONB 1|1!5w FLETCHER JOHNSTON, EDITOR SUBSCRIPTION RATE $1.00 A YBAR Stratford, March 25, 1927 . INTERESTING SPECULATIONS It is interesting to consider, in hear- ing the old soldiers of the Fenian Raid recalling days that are gone, to think that in the years to come that the veterans of the late war, at present so fresh in everyone's minds, will also become aged and bent old men with recollections of the war '14'. It's a bit hard to conceive just yet and it is also an intereSting speculat- ion to wonder how many changes will occur before the veterans of today are as far from their experiences as the veterans of '67 are today. For in- stance since 1867 there has come the telephone, the radio and all the other marvellous pieces of electric equip- ment, then unknown and also in an- other field, the automobile, the air- plane and like marvels of modern travel. Then too the changes in sur- gery from the days of 67 to the pre- sent andother great and startling feat- ure. Just to speculate what the next 60 years may bring forth is to open a line of thought too great for human imagination. It may be that a way of prolonging life indefinitely may have been discovered by that time or on the other hand the world may relapse into savagery; anything seems POS sible and even probable, if the facts be studied. STRATFORD SHOPS ATTRACTIVE The spring-like sunshine these days sends the snow away. It also lights up the small shabbiniss of our still winter costumes. Fur coats and zip- pers may be still mecessary, but fresh details would brighten the ef- fect. And just as the demand com- mences, the inevitable supply fol- lows. Stratford stores have a way with women. Any of these nice after- noons you will see hundreds of at- tractive people who simply won't be dragged away from the shops. We don't wonder at this. The spring stocks are delightful and are well worth a "curiosity" visit. And let us whisper, the prices are quite good, and very often better than at the larger city stores. * Ed * Lent is a season of repentance. This year it is also a Season of reju- venation. For it is late and comes hand in hand with spring sunshine. spring flowers and spring cleaning. By the way--that spring feeling of "can't work, can't play" isn't a pro- duct of the imagination. It is a phys- jcal] condition brought on by sedent- ary pastimes. Just as your eyes Crave the sun and flowers, so your blood craves the fresh spring foods. Ever so Many doctors are now advising run-down folk to buy their "iron injections" in lettuce and spinach. Stratford merchants can supply these delicacies, fresh and attractive as when pulled from one's own gar- den in July. They are remarkably low-priced, too, and will pay you good dividends in health and vigor. MICROBE, 'TIS OF THEE! (Frank Hal, in Toronto Saturday Night) (Kissing, Says a doctor, is danger- ous. 40,000 germs pass in a single kiss. If that is so, it looks as if a lot of wives are going to get kissed after this.) Out of the mouth of Nell Into the valley of breath, Into the jaws of Jeff Rode the forty thousand! Was now the man dismayed? No! Nor again the maid! Both cheered the germ parade, All forty thousand_!............ Theirs not to reason why, Theirs but to kiss and die, (Let the germs multip-y. Twice forty-thousand! ) The learned doctor does not explain how he came by the figure, 40,000, nor does he indicate that it might be possible, under certain conditions, for the 40,000 germs to pass. (And by the way, do they proceed in mass forma- tion or in single file?) But we will accept the doctor's figures, for there is no doubt that he has studied the matter a great deal. Incidentally, in this connection, they will never again be able to make us believe that myth about the hardships of scientific re- search! Oh, boy! I've no fear in kissing Bella Underneath her pink umbrella, And the same applies to Maud, Lu- cille and Flo; For we've made and sealed a bargain (In the proper, legal jargon) As regards the forty thousand mi- crobes, so: She will kiss them-- ; Then I'll kiss her and return them, In this way we each retain our status quo! me--lI'll not spurn The inexpensive yet suitable gift,a ring that is expressive of the latest fancy or mode in original or unique settings and semi-precious stones. E. Donnelly, B.A., Pastor Phone 51 166 Church St. TOMATO SALAD. ° ; | beaten and fry Don't you think it would be a good idea at times to take stock of our housekeeping methods, Just have a look at ourselves. Are we doing our work in a rounda- bout, tortuous way, without the help of labor saving devices that are avallable to us? Economy is all right--itis more» than all right. But economy doesn't always mean going without things. The expenditure of needless labor for the great part of a woman's lifetime is wicked extravagance compared with the expenditure of a few dollars for something that would make the work easier. Let's look at our houses with see- ing eyes. It's not so easy to do. We can look at our friend's houses "with seeing eyes'--but our own? Why say--!I kick my toe against that worn spot in our kitchen linoleum six times a day and yet I'm hardly aware of it. I'm used to it now my neighbor has a new "Inlaid" linoleum on her kit- chen floor. It looks like polished marble only that it's so quiet and easy to walk on. It's immaculate--looks as though it never would get dirty. And my neigh- bor happily skips through her work --I hear her whistling like a_ bird right now. No slave, that one!
