EH MIRROR THE MIRROR PUBLISHED BVERY FRIDAY AT THB FLETCHER JOHNSTON PRESS, 123 ON- YARIO ST., STRATFORD. PHONB 115w FLETCHER JOHNSTON, EDITOR GUBSCRIPTION RATE $1.00 A YBAR Stratford, April 1, 1927 THE HUMOR WE ARE IN AT MEAL-TIME HAS MUCH TO DO WITH OUR DIGESTION "In what concerns you much do not thing you have companions," is an epigram that few people remem- ber. We were reminded of this tact the other day when one man slapped another on the back and said to him: "Vou cut out breakfast, eat a lunch- eon if you like, but. hardly anything at supper. That's the only way to reduce." Guess this treatment would do just as he said. Because this gentleman had become a diet enthus- iast he thought another fat man should be his companion. in what seemed to concern him. If you want to look round instead of plump, or plump instead of flat the amount you eat is not altogether responsible for your avoirdupois. The mood you are in when at your meals has equally as much to do with your weight as what you eat. Those who look forward to their meals with pleasure assimilate their rations more readily than the 'ones who take no interest in what they get to eat. To enjoy what you eat counts for as much as the quan- tity of food that is consumed, There are times when everyone should be in good humor--one of them is at meal time and the other at bed time. A good feeling at meal time helps to produce saliva which makes the food more nourishing. Then no one should every carry into the sub-con- sciousness a bad feeling when retir- ing. Those who cut off their food supplies suddenly will notice a mus- cular inactivity unless the muscles are given their usual amount of nour ishment. Most of those who have curbed their appetites other than by degrees get to look somewhat like an empty grain sack rather than.a well-filled one. However, unless under your phys- ician's instructions you had _ better keep on with whatever plan has kept you feeling good whether you think you would look better one way or the other. The round figure, we are told, is coming into style again, so a num- per of the fair sex will find their way back to their former menu. Most 'people, however, who start these fads may keep them up about as long as Tennyson did without his smoke. It ig said that he threw his pipe out of the window while retiring--being dis- gusted with the habit of smoking-- but early next morning was seen looking for his old friend. When we know the average person's ability to stay away from a good meal, why be alarmed at anyone losing weight for want of nourishment, unless they are dieting for a specific purpose other than to reduce. "DUST WILL KEEP, BUT VIOLETS WON'T The spring is here--housecleaning time Descends upon the land! And busy housewives rush about, A nervous, worried band. For with the dawn of springtime fair They fain must fight the foe, And scores of microbes, tons of dust, Into oblivion go. The scent of flowers is in the air, But what reek they of this? The birds are singing everywhere. All this delight they miss; For, don't you know, housecleaning time Has come up on the land, And flats must be turned down, And men won't understand. upside O sister mine, hold on a space In your dreadnaugh campaign; A few weeks more, the selfsame place Will show more dust again; Just take a sniff of spring time air And let the cleaning wait; For "dust will keep, but violets won't" As some find out-too late. THE HEN CAME FIRST- Which came first, the hen or the egg ?--Old brain-teaser. The hen came first, There is no doubt; It laid the egg And hatched it out! "Any old place I hang my hat' is not a very high conception of home. Eddie Guest goes further, he says; "It takes a heap of livin' to make a house a home.' While that many contain more than a grain of truth, as far as'the old folks are concerned it does not answer the question by any means! If asked if your place was a house or home the answer would be "home" But is it? Is it the place you like to be, the place to which you love to return? More than that is it a place your children fondly call home and to which they gladly bring their friends. and playmates? A house even though furnished, is not always a home. To fully warrant the name it must be more than a furnished shelter or a place in which to live. It must be a place of comfort and pleasure, a place of which you are proud, a place to which you like to invite friends and a place to which your friends like to come, The latter applies strongly to the young people for if it is a home of which they are proud and to which they like to in- vite their friends they will take a lot of their pleasure and spend much of their time at home. Often it is possible to learn from the young folks. Do they take a de- light in and enjoy their pleasures at home with their chums or do they prefer to go out to the homes of their playmates? Often young folks, not youngsters, but 'teen age boys and girls, would prefer to have their | friends come to their place, but hes- itate because their home is not furni- shed quite as nicely as Bessie's or Jack's. Young people are sensitive about such things. They want' to be proud of the furnishings of their home. Old. furniture, even though hal- lowed by long association and cher- ished memories, means nothing to them. They judge it. by its appearance and compare it with the furniture in some friend's home or the furnishings shown in the movies. Teen age boys and girls admire and appreciate new tastefully furnished homes to a degree that would sur- prise most adults. This places a new light upon the question of new furniture and new furnishings. It is easy to become = ac- customed to home surroundings that are not as attractive or as modern as they might be and often to be- come accustomed is to the younger generation it might be that these same furnishings might appear drab and uninviting. It is not sufficient to pass it off with the suggestion that what is good enough for the older folk is good enough for the younger ones. That does not change its ap- pearance in their eyes. They know what it should be and what others have and know the kind of home they would like for their Own. If faced with the probiem of keep- ing young people at home, of induc- attractively, using the newer designs j within and without. ing them to have their good times in their own house, furnish your home and see if the problem is not more than half solved. Do for the young folk what you would not do for your- self--spare no pains to make your place a home and to keep it attractive The Hornerrskir.
