Pe EE ee Re gee Poy Pe ee aS THE MIRROR The Story of Chemistry By Floyd L. Darrow (The Bobbs-Merril] Co., pp. 528, $4.) For the general non-technical read- er who wishes to be informed on the past history, present standing and fu- ture prospects of this, the most prac- 'tical ef sciences, we have here an up- -to-date story written in a graphic and entertaining style, free from for- bidding chemical equations and mathe- matical expressions but still accurate and authoritative. Current literature of the latest research has been drawn upon and much of the story here told has not yet reached any of our text books. Two interesting chapters on the work of the alchemist and _ the achievements in pure research give an historical background for the rest of the narrative which opens with an accurate and full, yet popular and un- derstandable account of the new theory of the atom and its structure. The author has the happy faculty of making comparatively easy reading out of what is usually considered to be difficult material. The marvellous discoveries in radio-activity, sub- atomic energy and transmutation of elements are related in a most enter- taining way. The important part that chemistry is playing in the solution of our big industrial and social problems is clearly shown in chapters on Chemis- try and Power, Chemistry and Dis- ease, Agriculture and War, Rubber, etc. Sai if a certain desirable or essential material is not to be obtained in suf- ficient quantities or cheaply enough the research chemist of our day is set to work to artificially duplicate it or produce a satisfactory substitute. The almost magical things accomplished along this line in the case of dyes, ammonia, lacquers, medicines, perfum ery, rayon, etc., read like the Arabian Nights' Entertainment. If this book were widely read the efforts of our Canadian Governments and Universities to establish and sup- port Departments of Research would certainly have a_ stronger backing from 'the people than at present.
