Two young men, one a barber and the other the ex-employee of a pool- room, set forth to sell securities; and for several days they prospered enor- mously. Conservative folk there was something felt sure that unsound, and but could present no proof. The two partners built luxurious homes for themselves; they rode in cars of the highest price; they win- tered in Florida and summered abroad. All this was very discouraging to the men who had known them when they were poor, and whose honest ef- forts had won little more than a liv- ing. But the explosion occurred a few weeks ago. When the wreckage is cleared away, the two millionaires will consider themselves lucky if they can go back to the barber shop and the poolroom. They wilt probably go to jail. There is a wise verse which reads: "Fret not thyself because of _evil- doers; neither be thou envious against the workers of iniquity." A good share of people's mental wear and tear comes from disregard- ing this sage advice. Lots of us work ourselves into a fever every morning before we have finished reading the newspaper. "How does So-and-So get away with USE YOUR TALENTS What is the value of an education unless you use is? You may be the possessor of knowledge of great value, for which thousands hunger, and if you shut it up and don't use it for the benefit of your fellow men, you are a miserable miser who hides his gold in the dark and keeps it out of circulation. Education, like fortune, cannot be taken with you in the end. Why not pass it on, as some one did before you and made it possible for you to ac- quire all this knowledge which you so jealously hoard and think of as your own? DIDN'T SUIT THE KIDDIES Romeo ward school children were quite pleased at the sight of the fire apparatus in front of their school Tuesday morning. The fire to suit many of them was hardly spectacular enough to close the school. It was only a chimney fire, but firemen again made record time after the alarm was sent in. W. G. Also it would be interesting to know how many ef my readers would reg- ister surprise if not incredulity, at the statement recently made by a na- tional authority on interior decora- tion, that "80 per cent of the effective- ness of any beautiful interior is due to an intelligent use of color and tone." The decorator's statement is. cor- rect. Color is the "master key to beauty" in home _ decoration, and for this reason I regard it as essen- tial to revert to various phases of the subject at intervals. One problem that confronts' the novice when starting out to build a color scheme is -~where to begin-- what to take as a starting point--as a motif for the scheme. Almost anything can Serve as a motif: a rug, a wallpaper pattern, a length of drapery fabric, a picture, a vase, etc. Do you see the advantage of such a method? First, the object like, the entire color scheme based thus selected being one that you like, the entire color scheme based on this fundamental object will bear the stamp of your own individuality; second, the object having been de- signed by an expert, its coloring is correct and can be relied upon to guide the taste of the novice. It is always advisable to get some of the dominant of controlling color --and sometimes all the colors--in the walls and floor covering. But since the walls constitute a back- ground , it is advisable, in general that the colors applied to them should be neutralized or toned down. Of course, the choice of the dom- inant color is governed by the room exposure; warm colors, yellow, and its derivatives, gold, cream, ivory, light tan, cafe*%au-lait in north rooms; cool colors, blue, green, gray, violet in rooms receiving an abund- ance of sunshine. Floors in Color. Today I plan to discuss an old, familiar element in room decoration which now is performing in a new role: floors in color. This idea at first will be rather startling to those who have become habitual to the prevailing light toned natural finish --which I have pointed out is de structive to good decoration-- and even to those who have been fortu- ate enough to secure dark toned floors. I am aware that color in floors Hardwood floors in colors, such as royal blue, pastel green, orchid, ebony black, Spanish brown, autumn brown, dove gray and silver gray. For those who prefer linoleum floors, all the charming' colors named above are available; not only plain colors, but striated or jaspe patterns which are so much more practical and individual. Tile and marble designs, of course, are more plentiful than ever, embracing the most entrancing color effects imagin- able. Any color scheme can be start- ed from one or another of these pat- erns which thus constitute veritable color eWides. There are even bed- room linoleums in dainty tints and small designs on which scatter rugs may be thrown for warmth, foot com- fort and color contrast. And you know that linoleum is wonderfully easy to keep in good condition! READ THE ADS. FUNERAL SERVICE R.
