KILL CABBAGE WORMS WITH POISON MIXTURE Arsenic, Nicotine and Lime Prove Effective Against Aphids and Others Arsenic and nicotine in combin- ation with lime have been found to be the most effective materials to use in cambating cabbage worms and aphids in tests of various me- thods of treatment: made at the Geneva Experimental Station. Cab- bage worms are more or less abund- ant at this time of the year, and may prove quite destructive if not combated with a poison dust. or Spray. Aphids have already made their appearance in conSiderable _lhumbers in some sections and the addition of a little nicotine to the poison dust used for cabbage worms will check this pest quite effectively. A Good Dust Mixture, The most effective mixture test- ed in the station plantings contains 15 parts of powdered lead arsen- ate to 100 parts of hydrated lime, This is dusted directly on the Plants, and according to this au- thority, does not in any way im- pair their use for human food. Re- peated applications of the dust dur- ing the season are necessary for really effective control, especially when the heads are forming, as hew growth is continually being ex- posed to the ravages of the cab- bage worms. If aphids are present in any considerable number, it is suggest- ed that 1 per cent nicotine be add- ed to the poison dust. This: will in- crease the eost of the mixture HANOVER FREIGHT SHEDS DESTROYED -- $20,000 Loss Occasioned When C. N. R. Building Struck by Lightning Demage estimated at $20,000 was caused this morning, when a_ bolt of lightning struck the C. N. R. Freight Sheds at Hanover, complete- ly destroying them The crash came at 2:15 o'clock during the electrical storm that raged throughout West- ero Ontario Jast night and early this morning. Kennedy, who was passing noticed the fire and he promptly notified the Hanover Fire Department. The firemen arrived in a very few minutes but the fire sad spread very yapidly and they had no chance to save the building. A large crowd gathered and a large number volunteered to help the fire- men, and with this assistance they suceeded in saving six box cars and thei: contents which were stored in the building. Four other cars and their contents however were com- pletely destroved. The C. N. R. station which is very close to the freight sheds was very badly scorched also and it was only due to the gallant work of the fire department that it wasn't destroyed. Three cars which were near the sheds were badly scorched and their contents were practically ruined. Besides the loss of the building and the four box cars, a number of very valuable records and railroad papers Were destroyed, which will be very THE MIRROR 5) ' Grapefruit Now is Crystallized Only Rind Is Used; Pulp Is Made Into Other Dishes Select grapefruits which have thick, spongy rinds (not the best kind for the table). SMOKE BOMBS BIG AID Come Into Use in Finding of Sunken Ships STOCKHOLM, July 27--A new means of. locating sunken submar- ines is being developed at Stock- holm navy yard. The method con: sists in discharging signal bombs 'rom the sunken craft to the surface of the water. The bombs, which explode with fire and smoke, thereby giving the location of the disabled vessel, will be placed in groups on the deck or the conning tower, and released from the engine room by means of air pressure. If discharged from a | depth of 98 feet, the bomb will light a flame that will stay lit for three minutes and which can be seen widely around. The distance between the bombs will tell the rescue ships whether the submarine remains stationary or is carried along by the under- tow. The heart's housed secret in the soft dark eye.--L. E.
