Rain Good For Grain After It Is Stooked Nearly every day we realize the significance of what Emerson once wrote, "That we can learn something from every man we meet." Mr. Rey- nolds made q casual call at our office this week when the conversation na- turally led to the weather. That most popular of all topics. "Well," said Mr. Reynolds, "a shower of raig wouldn't do any harm now." "What about the grain?' we inquired. To this he replied: "Grain if it is stook- ed will thresh much better after the rain than it will otherwise." This wes- n't Roy Reynolds, but his father, for Roy doesn't know much, we imagine, about farming. He knows more about the kind of a suit you should wear, and the hat and tie that will go with it. Anyway we never knew before that rain was good for the grain after it was stooked. | = Local Interest Mr. Thos. Weir motored to Toronto this week with Mr. and Mrs. A. Hoff- man, the latter being a sister of Mr. Weir. GLAD TO SEE "BILL" AGAIN Mr. Wm. Maynard, Manager Bank Commerce in Cudworth, Sask., is holi- daying at the home of his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Maynard, 176 Elizabeth street. Mr, Maynard's father wag the popular manager of the Bank of Commerce in this city for a number of years and another son Frank, is in the Bank of Montreal here. Well, "Bill" we were not only glad to see you, but to see you looking so well. -- Mrs. J. C. Irwin and Mrs. Wm. Mack, former Stratford girls, are the guests of Sergt. and Mrs. Geo. Brad- ley, 167 Nile street, having motored from Chicago. These girls have sure- ly the secret of perpetual youth, for they look younger now than they did 5 years ago. Of course, they are not old by any means. . Mrs. E. G. Nye, of Montreal, is visit- ing at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. J. Welsh, 107 Well street. Mrs. Nye is accompanied by her bright young son, Joe. Mr. H. B. McClellan, 163 Mornington street, had a birthday this week, and there aren't many younger boys for their age around town. Time has wrought but few wrinkles in his azure brow. -Here's hoping that it will be many years before anyone collects his insurance and judging from his ap- pearance it will be. Maybe-his vocal gymnastics has done much to keep him fit and heis not only a good sing- er but a great lover of poetry. Prof. Baird should ask him to sing more often than he does. NOW LOCATED IN HIS NEW OFFICES Dr. R. A. Reid is now located in his new and handsome offices over the Tamblyn drug store. They have been specially renovated and the very lat: est equipment installed. Dr. Reid since coming to the city some ten years ago has won for himself a large practice through intelligently and sin- cerely studying the needs of every pa- tient who visits his office. He re- ceived the appointment of optical school inspector some time ago, and in this way has gained much valu able experiente in the fitting of glass- es for children. J. H. THE MIRROR Only Scrap of the Year Better Than None At All "An Irishman was asked what he thought of the war?" His reply was that it wasn't much, but then it was better than no scrap at all. The same thing might be said of the scrap at the council meeting the other night, and "begorra" Ald. Smith, we believe, is of Irish extraction, but You'd never know it by his name, and when an Irishman takes up arms against a Scotch man, well one doesn't know just what may hap- pen, but the disappearance of the red car from the city by the Fire Chief made this alderman seemingly as an- gry as a red flag does a bull. You remember the rhyme we learn- ed at school "If you gently touch a nettle it will sting you for your pains, grasp it like a lad of metal and its softly silk remains." This, however, isn't always true of the country man who has the thistle for his emblem, but Mayor Andrew proved the excep- tion Monday night. Just here We are not giving our opinion whether Mayor Andrew was right or wrong in giving his permis- sion to the Fire Chief to take the ca- out of the city without the consent of the other members of the council, but we heard' of men _ being paid to drive through the country with the name of their firm tgey represent painted on the car. Lacrosse games in Stratford at one time was as well patronized as is hockey now. The four midget taems are Kastners, Rey- nolds,, Stillman's and Kayo's. The players are aged 16 and under -and play as good lacrosse as any intermed- iate or senior teams.
