Bank of Montreal on Downie street and-as a result two young men, al- leged to be members of a Detroit bandit group, are now behind in the county jail awaiting trial on a charge of conspiracy with attempt to rob. A couple of weeks ago the police received a tip that the Bank of Tor- onto was to be looted but later on were informed that an employee of the Bank of Montreal had been ap- proached by the two men, who gave London addresses. He informed 'the police with the result that Chief Broadley instruct- ed him to agree to the plan and a trap was laid for the pair. They, again returned to the city a week ago to-night and approached' the bank employee,.-who agreed to get .the combination of the safe and the key of the bank, He demanded $300 and is said to have been given $20 With a promise that he would be paid the balance as well as 10 per cent. of the loot. The pair then told him that they would return to the city Wednesday night and when they arrived the eT FOLKS FAR AWAY as well as those near and dear to you are expecting your photo- graph for Christmas. He also told him that the safe could not be opened unless the time lock was plugged and the man told him that if this could not be done he would bring a Detroit safe cracker to the city to do the job. Just as he placed the paper and key in his pocket the police swoop- ed down on him and placed him un- der arrest, along with his alleged ae- complice in the car. They gave their names as James Talbot and Fred Slann of London. In police court Thursday morning they were re- manded on a "conspiracy" charge for eight days. Those present were Chairman Gregory, Mayor Andrew, Commissioners Seigel and Glenn and Manager Manson. The minutes of last meeting were read and adopted. Sec-Treas. Myers, who was one of the delegates attending the Gas Convention in Hamilton, gave a very concise and instructive report of the proceedings. During July the commission re- ceived a communication from H. E. Pp. C. revising the rates on three wire. domestic services. Up to that time the rate had been 33¢., fol- lowing which it had been increased to 66c. This rate had been charged for two. billing periods, September and November. A subsequent com- munication was received from the H.E.F.C. advising that the 66c Ser- vice rate should apply only to, three wire services having permanent in- stallation of 2,000 watts or over. When this matter came up for dis- cussion at the Uublic Utilities Com- mission held Wednesday night, Commissioner Glenn moved that the overcharge of 33c on each of the two billings, a total of 66c., be re- bated. to the consumers who could satisfy the general manager that they were entitled to this rebate. After some discussion, Mr, Glenn's motion was seconded by Commis- sioner Siegel and -carried. Likes The City "From the first day I came to Stratford,' said Mr. R. G.
