THE MIRROR PRESENT SURROUNDINGS INADEQUATE FOR NURSES Maybe there is no other institution in the city that is more closely related to the people of Stratford than the General Hospital. Because of this fact much interest is being taken by the ratepayers in the by-law to provide a building for a new nurses' home, which will be voted on at the coming municipal el- ection. : The need of a new home for the nurses has been evidenced for some time, but the Hospital Board has waited until they were compelled through necessity to ask the councii to place the matter before the rate- payers. \ In conversation with Chairman Ma- kins the other day, he informed The Mirror scribe that a new home for the nurses has been obvious for a long while, and several grand juries have included the recommendation in their reports. The County Council has intimated that if Stratford pro- vides its share the county will do its part. Last year the hospital treated 1,- 724 patients and the creditable show- ing that the hospital has made is largely due to the efficient staff, which includes in addition to Miss Z. Hamilton, superintendent, an as- sistant superintendent, three super- visors, one instructress, 14 sen- ior nurses,, 14 intermediate nurse, four juniors and six probationers. For a staff of 43, the accommoda- tion includes one residence. in which The rest sleep on the top floor of the isola- tion Hospital. So cramped are the conditions that hospital authorities 'declare some of the beds have to be used twice a day. Under the circumstances, they de- clare, it is impossible to give the nurses the home surroundings that are essential to efficient work. They point out too that the long hours on duty and the time the nurses must spent in studies entitle them to liv- ing quarters that would at least be comfortable. 8s SPECIAL ATTRACTION SUNDAY EV'G AT CENTRAL CHURCH Next Sunday evening it is predict- ed that the Central United Church will be crowded. The choir leader, Mr. Gotby, has been training for a few weeks about 75 male voices which will compris: the choir and provide the music dur- , ing the evening service. The pastor of the church, Rey. DeMille is a great believer in the power of song and for several Sunday evenings a song ser- vice has been held for a short time before beginning each regular Service. This feature has become very popu- lar and many attend to join in the old time gospel hymns, If the weather is favorable a large attendance is looked for Sunday even- ing, and by the way, apart from the singing you will enjoy hearing the speaker. Local Interest Beverley D. Reid spent the Christ- mas holidays in Toronto, Inglewood and Brampton. In the latter place he visited his sister, Mrs. Geo. Flood. Mr. Thos. Weir, Nile street, spent the Christmas holidays in Toronto, and has returned home again. - Miss Eunice Lamb, who is attend- ing the Toronto University was the guest for a few days of Misses Bertha and Lucy McLellan, 154 Nile street. Leslie Johnson, one of the popular young C.N.R. ticket clerks at the sta- tion, who has been indisposed for a few weeks, we are glad to say is im- proving and will be on the job again in a few days.
