pr , THE STRATFORD MIRROR - GRATEFUL TO FRIENDS FOR GIFTS OF SYMPATHY Mrs. Edward Ward wishes to ex- 'press her sincere gratitude to those who sent their beautiful gifts and words of sympathy in her recent bereavement. It will be remembered that Mrs. Ward suffered the loss of her only daughter, Marjorie Fern, who died suddenly in the Isolation Hospital in Stratford' on Saturday, June the sixth, at the age of five years and nine months. Marjorie was a bright and happy child whom none could help but admire and love. It is not to be wondered at that so many people tried to console the bereaved mother in a loss that can only be borne with Christian fortitude, and in the hope that Marjorie still lives in a sie where all is bright and cheer- ul, Students Win Honor honor to themselves and their city by winning scholarships awarded by the Senate of the University of Toronto in the Faculty of Arts in the second year. There is great rejoicing among for eleven baby swans are now follow- ing their parents up and down the river. Stratford now' has twenty- three swans with the acquisition of the young ones. There were five nests this year and all of the eleven' young swans are in a healthy con- dition. They are grey in color when young and are able to take to the water three days after they come out of the eggs. The Park superintend- ent, A. G. Walgh makes a special request of youngsters and others to desist from pestering the swans and their offspring. Sutter is chairman of the men's general committee which has charge of the arrangements, while Mrs. W. P. Whale is chairman of the com- mittee of Pythian Sisters. The sec- retary of the men's committee is O. J. Kerr, while Mrs. Hazel Smith is acting in a similar capacity for the ladies. These two committees are co-operating in making the prelimin- ary arrangements . : While no definite information as to how many will attend the meer- ing here is available as yet, it is es--- timated that there will be at least 100. men delegates and almost as many ladies. In addition there will be many visitors who are not dele- 'gates. : A slight change has been made in © the proposed program, with the re- -- sult that instead of holding two me- _ morial services, as formerly planned, a joint service for Knights id Sis- ters will be held in the city hall on the afternoon of July 13. If accom- modation permits, the public may be -- invited to this service. ' Forty-seven Knights have passe away during the past year. Included in this number are Past Grand Chancellor, J. P. McLeod of Hamil- ton, and Past Grand Chancellor and Past Supreme Representative Charles Farquharson of Stratford. Five Past Chancellors are also included in the list of deceased. The grand lodge meeting will be adjourned for the memorial service. On Monday afternoon the ladies are planning a program in Lakeside Park. On Monday evening a joint © banquet will be held in Parkview United Church, at which prominent ~ officers of both organizations will be the chief speakers. The ladies of © Parkview church will provide the banquet. s No Tenders Received No tenders were received for the entire plant and equipment of the © according to information received by Industrial Commissioner L. J. Salter. It is understood that a few tenders for part of the equipment were re- ceived but great importance is not being attached to these as_ those who are interested in having the af- fairs of the Brooks company cleaned up are desirous of having bids on the complete plant. In t methaenimeooiannfwyo20a00 In the meantime, civic officials who are representing the city in the liti- gation connected with the city's claim on the plant and equipment state that there are no new develop- ments but that the proper steps are being taken to protect the city's in- terests. Asked as to the length of time ne- cessary to wind up the affairs of the company, they admit that is indefi- nite, but point out that a purchaser for the property would expedite mat- ters greatly. They feel that there is a very good chance of the prop- erty being sold, despite the fact that no tenders were received, § At the present time one or two companies are said to be communi- cating with local officials regarding the plant. Just as examination time rolls around, the regulations have been changed, and now there will be no more quar- antine for chickenpox, measles or mumps. It was Stratford citizens heard of the death of George Pepper, and former resident of Perth County, in Toronto. While not so many Strat- ford citizens were personally acquaint- ed with Mr. Pepper, they knew him through his generosity in donating a prize horse show at the International Plow- ing Match here last Fall. la Timely Suggestion. A very timely suggestion has come from members of the Community Welfare Bureau that the housekeep- ers of Stratford do up an extra sup- ply of fruit during the canning seas- on so that they will be prepared to lend assistance to the less fortunate during next winter. If each woman in charge of a home would do a little more than her family requires many needy families could be supplied when the necessity arises. This plan is being carried out in other places and Stratford would do well to adopt 1G with genuine regret that noted horseman of $500 for a Perth County eo Getting the chickenpox or the mumps was generally regarded as one of the sure ways of passing an examination. 'When some other member of the fam- ily took either of the diseases, it was doubly easy.
