"Exclusive - but not Expensive" Chiswell's Men's and Boys' Wear The Fletcher Johnston Press for fine Job Printing | "Sense and There is an interesting story behind that contented look on the face of Charlie Down these days.* It goes something like this: Charlie has a brother living over in Pennsylvania, who is quite a golfer. In fact, he won a cup not so long ago. Last week he and another chap, a friend of Char lie's, who pretends to know something about .cow pasture pool, came to Strat ford for a visit. * * Eo i Enter the hero. When the subject of golf came up, Charlie modestly ad- mitted that-he had played a little; but protested that he was a mere novice. Fiis guests agreed that he could know but little about the game, so when the trio wended their way out to the country club one day, it was decided that Charlie should be given a little present of four strokes for the course. * * * That was the visitors' arrangement, not Charlie's. The two experts had talked it over together and decided that Charlie should be stuck for the cigars, ginger ale, or what have you, for the duration of their visit. On the first hole, the novice took them Nonsense" both into camp. That was just a break of course, and so was the sec: ond one, but when he took the third and fourth, they began to regret their generosity, and wanted to cancel the agreement about the four strokes for the course. Charlie made them stick to their bargain, and as a result, the cigars came his way. * * * Charlie's guests had an alibi. They were new to the course, while Charlie was as much at home as he would be in his own back yard. Despite thig explanation, they took the precaution of calling off the handicap business the next day. To their disgust, the result was the same. Charlie was either very good or very lucky, and he was too consistent to call it luck. * * * That's just about all there is to be told. The visitors have departed. They told Charlie very plainly that he had no form and no technique. After that they wanted to know the secret of those long drives and those Jones- like approaches. THE STRATFORD MIRROR Sense and Nonsense CONTINUED "Shipwreck" Kelly is out of a job in Toronto. The officials refuse to pay him even if he does climb back to his perch atop the flag pole at Stratford needs a new chimney for the incinerator, the es- _ timated cost to be over five thousand dollars, * * & What's the connection between the incinerator and "Shipwreck" Kelly? Just This:---If "Shipwreck" will sit on a flagpole, Srobably he could be in duced to sit on a chimney. The city - eould fence off an area and charge to get in and see "Shipwreck" have his hair cut or drink ginger ale. The proceeds, of course, would go to a Special chimney fund and who could ' deny such a worthy cause? s * & - Yes that's right--What would we do with the garbage in the meantime? bd * * Little wooden ventilators have been placed over the openings in the wells at the civic pumping station to pre vent the kids from throwing in cones from nearby trees. Now they should build little fences around the fire hydrants to keep the motorists from 'clipping them off. x * & Since Assessor Thomas Ruston-~and J. J. Mason, census commissioner for North Perth, have made their state ments, the matter of the difference in population figures is prettly well cleared up. In fact, it is just as was Suspected, both officials are sure that their counts are correct. * * & After looking over the figures, some person has suggested that a/ budding poet should get busy and pen a few lines about the "lost tribe of the Avon." *x* ee & A local citizen rushed into the ot- fice of Agricultural Representative C. D. Graham the other day. He had just heard that the judge was in this county to make his awards in the corn competition. He was bitterly disappointed when told that the judge had departed, because, he said, he had a corn which he felt sure would carry off a prize. * * New York is awaiting the arrival from Germany of a new five-fold in- strument which looks like a grand piano but which is in reality a com- bination of instruments. The inven- tors are said to have received thei: inspiration after listening to the music box down at the _ Stratford arena last winter. Visitor--You say you have fourteen attorneys in this town?' Any of them criminal lawyers? Native--Well, some of 'em are. The trouble is that you can't prove it on 'em. DR. N. J. HISCOX L.D.S., D.D.S.
