At the city hall steps, beneath the large Christ- mas tree with its beautiful colored lights, he will gather the children around him and present each with a parcel from the mysterious pack which he always carries on his back at this time of the year. The contents of those parcels may be candy. Safe to say, there will be something which every little boy or girl will appreciate. Three Stratford men, Leon Duggan, R. T. Orr, and Dr. H. W. Baker have been in communication with Santa Claus practically ever since he left the north pole on his trip to Stratford. The Stratford men are all members of the Parks Board. The hour which has been set for Santa's arrival is 6.30. Following the presentation of gifts, the youngsters will be invited into the aduitorium of the city hall where John Till will en- tertain them with his famous Mar- ionettes. At eight o'clock, all kiddies will be expected to leave for home so they will be in bed in plenty of time before Santa visits their homes. Instead of Lay-Off New Schedule Likely Stratford citizens will be glad to hear that there is to be no lay-off at the C. N R. shops after the New Year, reports to the contrary notwithstand- ing. Although there has been no offi- cial announcement as yet, there is in- formation from: well-informed circles that a three-weeks per month sched-~ ule will be adopted rather than a lay- off of employees. While reduced working hours are not to be taken as a signal for re- joicing at any time, a step such as this would not be nearly so serious as laying oft a large number of men. When men are laid off, they are bear- ing the load which would be spread among all employees if the working hours were shortened, CERRO BOWLING After Tuesday, Dec. 22nd, until Monday, Jan. 4th, al- Yieys will be open for bowl]- ing. The real reason however, was that human beings might rub the prices off Christmas presents. ae ee A by-law regulating the parking of cars on the market square has been forwarded to Toronto for considera- tion. Someone has suggested that one might be prepared for Ontario Street now. * * * Ii the present weather continues, the local Board of Works may be able to rent that new snow blade to Palm- erston, ' % Eo * A few more games like those two which were staged at the arena on Monday night, and the light bill of the ice palace is due for a jump. * * * You can't flash red. lights like that without running up the power bill. | Pane aE The Mitchell boys didn't need any red lights to stop them. Their lack of condition did that. * * * Dave Pinkney's gang received an unexpected set-back in Brantford. The poor kids from Galt will have to bear the brunt of their wrath down at the arena to-night. * * * Getting beaten in Brantford and winning in Kitchener is like getting a new suit from Mahatma Gandhi and a table cloth from an Eskimo. * um * Correct this sentence: "Yes sir", said Wes. Binkley to Henry Bruce as they polished off their curling stones, "I hope it doesn't get any colder this year." * # * "Rip Van Winkle' 'is to be present- ed by the children of the school choir. Wonder will they have that long wait | between the first and second acts. * a * Col. A. W. Deacon has the distinct- ign of being about the only person in the city these days who has every person else's number. * * * When to be nonchalant--when you receive a Christmas card at the last minute from some person whose name you have just struck from your list. e. 828" Outstanding citizens shot--The Board of Education has posed for the annua! photo. The city council is next in. line. Pretty soon there won't be any need for wall paper over at the city hall. Se oF In conclusion, may we wish you a. Merry Christmas, and quote that gold- en rule, "As you give, so shall you receive." Stratiord Stores Are Doing Good Business Although the weather has not been conducive to Christmas shopping, the Stratford stores during the past week have been the scenes of busy pre- Christmas activity. On every hand, citizens with their parcels wrapped in bright Christmas paper have been searching the windows and counters for presents for their friends and re- latives, We in Stratford are very fortunate. Stratford stores carry a stock of mer- chandise which can be surpassed in few cities, even the large ones. Local merchants are progressive, and spare no trouble in making their places of business attractive for Christmas shoppers. While we would soon miss these preparations for Christmas if the merchant neglected to make them, we seldom think of 'telling him of our appreciation af them. The merchant is human. He likes to hear that you appreciate what he has gone to con- siderable trouble to prepare for you. Why not mention it to him? Spason se the and customers 1931.
