'THE STRATFORD MIRROR ~ OUTING WEDNESDAY Annual Picnic of Local Service Club and Families Held At Bayfield The members of the Stratford Lions Club and their families and friends, numbering about 60, attend- ed the club's annual picnic on Wed- _ nesday afternoon in Jowett's grove, Bayfield. By common consent the first item on the program was a dip in the lake, the temperature of the water being moderate, and "nearly everybody joined in the sport. The invigorating plunge gave the leonine gathering an appetite for the program of racts. These were held on the beach, the diffi- culties of locomotion in the heavy sand making for comedy as well Ss providing severe tests of prowess. - The picnickers adjourned to the -ball_-diamond about five o'cluck for a game of softball. They started out with two teams, each having ~ about 14 members and three cap- tains. Though the allegiance of the players shifted with the wind and thrice as swiftly the game pro- ceeded with great success until Lion Doc Cecil Quinlan insisted on re- maining at bat after Lion Art.' Partridge had "fanned" him three times in a row. : _. There was an attendance of 100 per cent. at the supper tables. This essential feature of the program was followed by jaunts out into the lake aboard the motorboat Elzee. After everybody had had a boat ride a bonfire was built on the "beach and as dusk feli everybody gathered around for a _ sing-song under the leadership of Lion Leo Wallis. The "barber shop harminy" interjected by Lion Doc Stan. Sutter and his supporter would have won a prize if there had been one offered for such a performance. As it was the honors were accorded to a soloist, the winner being Lion Ed. Thompson who would not refrain from entering the lists. The beach wee party broke up at about 10 o'clock, Escaped Prisoner Is _ Recaptured By Guards GUELPH, July 20--Romeo Le- duc, at. inmate at the Ontario Re- formatory, is back in that insti- tution again after a brief spell of freedom, being recaptured by guards near Waterdown, Leduc was employed in the tailor shop and was sent with another pris- oner to deliver some clothing in another part of the building. Slhght but hard-hitting Joe Bialkowski, of the Windsor "Dominion Club, burned up the fairways on the Thames Valley golf course yesterday afternoon to score a 70 and a 79 for 36 holes of medal play, and to outdistance his nearest cival by 10 strokes. L. Waugh, from Stratford, another youth- ful shotmaker, and Gordon Wilson, of -Thames Valley, tied for second place with 159 strokes each. This trio, all of them young, but all accomplished club- wielders, led a field of 121 players in the third annual Western Ontario pub- lic links tournament. In his morning round, over a steange. course, Bialkowski found trouble, par- ticularly on-the second nine. He went out in 38 and came home in 41, when he slipped one over par on four holes® In the afternoon, however, he had found his stride and went out in 36; two over par, and came home in 34, two under perfect figures. His was the i--One chance of the day to better pac for the 18. On the last hole, a par five, he had-.a powerful tee shot, a good second and placed his approach within eight feet-.of the pin. He lined up his putt with care and stroked it smoothly, but with just a fraction too much force. The ball hit the back of 'road cup and bounced to stay on the ip. 5 Here are Joe's morning and after- noon cards as against par: 443 434 453--34 443 444 445--36--70 Bialkowski (morning): Out 554 534 354--38 444 555 455--41--79 afternoon): : 443 444 553--36 343 434 445--34--70 Gordon Wilson was the best of the numerous Thames Valley entrants.
