Spencer Funeral services were held today for George Arthur Spencer, well known Stratford resident, who died Tuesday afternoon at the home of his niece, Mrs. Wilfred Murphy, 243 Cobourg st. The services were held at the Immac- ulate Conception Church and inter- ment was made in Avondale cemetery. Mr. Spencer had been ill about a month and on Monday suffered a slight stroke. Born in Brantford on July 12; 1878, Mr. Spencer was in his 66th year. Unmarried, he had lived with his par- ents up to the time of their death, coming to Stratford when he was one year old. The family residence was at 210 Douro st. Mr. Spencer served for 42 years as a machinist for the Canadian National |; Railways, retiring in his 64th year. A resident of Stratford for the past 65 years he was a son of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Thomas Spencer. A mem- ber of Immaculate Conception church, he took an active interest in the Holy Name Society of the parish. Mr. Spen- cer also belonged to the Knights of Columbus, being a member of Kilroy Council, Stratford. The members of the lodge held a service at the Gingras Funeral Home, 20 Caledonia st., where the body rested, Thursday evening. Mr. Spencer was well known in in- door: bowling circles and was also an enthusiastic horseshoe player. Surviving are one brother, James Spencer, 172 Queen st.; two nieces, Mrs. Wilfred Murphy, 243 Cobourg st., and Miss Mary Spencer, Detroit; and three nephews, Albert Spencer, St. Peter's Seminary, London; Clarence Spencer, North Bay, and James Spen- cer, Rockford, Ill. Mr. Spencer was predeceased by two brothers, John, who died eight years ago this month, and Edward Patrick, who died two years ago in March. Stratford Theatres Are Showing 2 Great Films Stratford theatres will exhibit this week two films that are sponsored by the Canadian Motion Picture War Ser- vices Committee and endorsed by the National War Finance Committee as valuable contributions to the success of the Sixth Victory Loan campaign, which will open on April 24. Although the pictures are said to have high value as entertainment, they are be- ing shown in leading picture theatres across Canada for the primary purpose of supporting the Victory Loan. "The Shining Future," to be shown at the Avon today and Saturday, has been contributed by the Hollywood motion picture industry without cost to Canada's National War Finance Committee. "The Fifth Christmas," to be shown at the Classic today and Saturday, was produced by the Cana- dian Army Film Unit in co-operation with the film units of the Royal Cana- dian Navy and the R.C.AF. GO OVER THE TOP Perth county achieved 118 per cent. of its February objective of $6,750 worth of war savings stamps, accord- ing to figures released by W. F. Helm, chairman of war savings stamp sales for this district. Total February sales were $8,011. Considering Weather Tag Day Got A Fair Response The Women's Hospital Aid tag day last Saturday netted $19.34, and this in spite of unfavorable weather con- ditions. The award of four war sav- ings stamps donated by Mrs. A. L. Baker for the largest amount turned in on house-to-house canvass, went to Dominica Trafagander, 61 Douglas st. The four war savings stamps for the highest amount in the downtown sec- tion, presented by Mrs. H. J. Malone, were won by Mary Dunbar, 34 Bruns- wick st. The co-operation of the pub- lic and the services of the enthusiastic young canvassers were deeply appre- ciated by the Hospital Aid, and by the committee in charge of the tag day: Mrs. R. W. Chippenden, convener, Mrs. E. K. Kneitl, Mrs. A. L. Baker, and [the president, Mrs. H. J. Malone. HEAR J. H. SKENE "The Cry for Social Justice" was the topic of an address given by J. H.
