Now is not the time to pass judge- ment on the Legislature's proposed plan to revise the conditions under which beers and liquors are sold in this Province. On the surface, the new plan seems to be a step in the Tight direction, and present indica- tions are that it will be approved by the Legislature shortly. Under the sponsor- ship of the Gillette Safety Razor Co., CJCS will broadcast direct from Churchill Downs the famous Ken- tucky Derby, on Saturday from 6 to 6.30 p.m. Present indications are that colourful Churchill Downs will be jammed to capacity. This year's running of the derby will be the 72nd in an unbroken string which started back in 1875. Since those early days the Derby has come a long way, both in pop- ularity and prosperity. Each starter in this year's running represents an entry fee of more than one thousand dollars and the purse has been jack- ed up year after year until now it's a hundred thousand dollar added affair. That means that Saturday's victory will be worth around sev- enty thousand dollars to the winner, a far cry from the two thousand, eight hundred and fifty dollars that the owner received when Aristedes won the 1875 Derby. The war has dimmed Derby Day for the past four years, but on Saturday things will be back to normal for the greatest horse race in America. Between 12 and 19 tested thorough- breds will battle it out at Churchill As time narrows down, here are some of the almost certain starters: The Texas typhoon, Assault, a win- Saturday Is Derby Day ; ~The day that racing fans wait for ner in the Wood Memorial at Ja- maica track; Lord Boswell, winner in last week's twelve thousand, five hundred dollar Blue Grass Stake; and Pellicle, winner of the Louisiana Derby. There are many strong con- tenders such as Marine Victory, Misto. Gold, In Earnest, Spy Song, Amamond, Hampden, Rippey and Mr. Chairman. It will be a great day for the ex- pected hundred thousand who will journey to the Blue Grass State to watch the turf classic, and a great broadcast for the people of Strat- ford. Tune in CJCS Saturday and see if Eddie Arcaro can ride his fourth winner, Lord Boswell. Listen to the greatest race of them all, The Kentucky Derby. Remember, too, that CJCS is car- rying the top ranking Allan Young Show from Hollywood... with Can- ada's own top ranking comedian. 'Prout and Garwood last Saturday evening concluded their series of "Place the Hits" broadcasts for the season. Of course it is their inten- tion to return to the air after the summer months. "Place the Hits" was a very popular program over CJCS, with many a luck winner of cash prizes and guest tickets to the Avon theatre. Last week's winner was Muriel Knott, of 113 Centre street, who not only won the $21 .|jackpot, but had her winnings doubl- ed because her letter enclosed a sales slip from the "Store of Qual- ity".
