ede THE STRATFORD MIRROR Friday, May 3, 1946. By FRANK FILMAN Most popular British actor with North American fans is James Mason, whose fine work in "The Seventh Veil" may give him the place in American esteem once held by the late Leslie Howard. Mason may come to Hollywood to co-star with Joan Crawford in "Portrait in Black." They are a promising com- bination and Carol Reed, the British director, may come to this side to direct them. * * * Paulette Goddard and Burgess Meredith will investigate the pos- sibility of appearing in French films when they fly to Paris. The couple plan to leave Hollywood as soon as Miss Goddard completes her role in "Suddenly It's Spring", in which she is co-starred with Fred MacMurray. As she has three additional pictures to make under her present Para- mount contract, plans for a French picture for the Merediths will be aimed for 1947 production. a z ak The Hollywood Foreign Corres- pondents Association, whose mem- bers syndicate Hollywood news to some 500,000,000 readers through- out the world, announce that in ad- dition to its regular annual awards it will this year give its first Special World Peace Prize to Jack L. War- ner, vice-president of Warner Bros., for the production of the short, "Hit- ler Lives?" which the correspond- dents feel strikes a note of world im- portance in its warning against the perpetuation of Nazi ideology. * * * At long last Melvyn Douglas, whose Suave and friendly romanticism has been missing from the screen during his. service in the army, will return in "My Empty Heart", in which he will make love to Rosalind Russell. Virginia Van Upp, one of the few female directors, will take charge. There has been some agitation from the ladies in their thirties that the screen ignores the romantic in- clinations of all but young folks. Neither Douglas nor Russell will see thirty again so perhaps this will satisfy the complainers. Eo * * Peculiar point of view some people have about money is reveal- ed in the story about the man who invited a friend to dinner at a famous restaurant new to both. After a sumptuous meal a check for ten dollars was presented. The host protested at what he considered an exorbitant charge and after much argument he paid it. The complainer had a_ failing, gambling, and after dinner he took his guest to a new gaming house, which he was visiting for the first time. There he lost $2,500 and left. Sitting in the taxi on the way home, he was glum for most of the way, and didn't speak. His guest for the evening respected his desire for quiet in which to meditate his folly. Then he spoke. "I vow I'll never go to that place again. Those people think money grows on trees. Imagine charging me ten dollars for two dinners."
