THE STRATFORD MIRROR Friday, May 10, 1946 Ss Y hua f ree nee / = ST KL L*) By FRANK FILMAN The British will spend dollar for dollar with the American producers of films in an endeavour to make their stars personally popular with the public through publicity and ad- vertising. . . . If the trend keeps up theatres will be as varied in a com- mercial way as drug stores. Theatres now have popcorn machines and candy stands and others are plan- ning tea rooms and soda bars. Film magazines may be sold in them in the near future. But the latest plan in the U.S.A. is the sale of frozen foods so that the lady matinee fan can see a show, buy dinner and get home in enough time ahead of hub- by to have it on the table waiting. a % * Clark Gable will make "The Hucksters", a satire on advertising agencies. His boss paid $200,000 for the screen rights to the book... Latest ladies to become producers are Lillian Hayward and Frances Manson, bringing Hollywood's total to four. Claudette Colbert will probably star in the screen version of "The Egg and I". .. . Remember the boyhoo thriller, "Bob, Son of Battle'? The classic dog yarn will be filmed. An anti-vivisection film is being made called "Thou Shalt Not Kill" - -- Van Johnson will star in "High Barbaree". . . . Canadian characters are beginning to turn up regularly in British films, story writers apparently requiring persons who appear to be Americans but are not. * * %* Shirley Temple continues to deny emphatically that she's on the stork's calling list... . Shades of the old west may not like it, but 75 stal- wart cowboys in that tale of the wide open spaces, "Cheyenne", had to muffle their spurs with cotton so the sound man could record "sweet nothings" between Dennis Morgan and Jane Wyman... . Persistent rumors still have it that Bing Crosby and Howard Hughes, who is also a very rich man, are angling to . .. Per doctor's orders, Joan Crawford ate nothing but steaks, salads and oil dressings while romancing with John Garfield in "Humoresque." On that heavenly diet she lost 17 pounds. Remember when beauties went from hunger on pineapple and lamb chops to get the same effect? * * * Ginger Rogers, who hasn't used makeup in her last four pictures, is the envy of every star in Hollywood. Out there they get up at dawn to capture as much sun for film mak- ing as they can and the fact that Ginger's face appears in its natural state allows her an hour more of sleep. CJCS Has Unique -| Musieal Library Visitors to the studios of CJCS are often amazed at the size of the radio studio's record library. Neatly stacked and carefully filed, it is con- tained in a small room, the walls of which are completely covered with specially-constructed racks. Just how many records are on file is a question no seems able to answer, but it has been estimated that it would be possible to broadcast re- corded music ten hours a day, seven day a week, for three months with- out once repeating a record. This unique musical library is one of the largest and most up-to-date in the country, and is one reason why listeners to CJCS never tire of their musical fare. Of course selecting the records for such a library is no amateur's task and requires an accurate and varied knowledge of musical styles and the average listener's tastes. While many of the discs record outstanding efforts of top-flight instrumentalists and are, in fact, rare recordings that have become collectors' items, the majority are chosen for their "easy listening" qualities. It is this com- bination of the unusual with the every-day favourites that gives CJCS programs their piquant flavour and helps earn this station one of the highest audience ratings in the province. Bob Moore, the man who pulled the curtain open and shut each night and who had to worry over the properties at each performance, succumbed to the dread disease which has been sweep- ing the town -- the Mumps. We all hope he gets better soon and can come back to school. Cheer up, Bob. The cast took time out on Tuesday to present the director of the play, Mr. O'Leary, with a brand new hat. It seems that Mr. O'Leary's old chapeau was ready for the hat graveyard -- wherever hats go when they die. Taking pity on Mr. O'Leary the cast bought him a snappy new fedora. Ray Frost says he's next in line for a new hat now. Well, I know a place where you can get dozens of "em, Ray. The Collegian has now reached the "dummy" stage. Two Saturdays ago the Sat Nite Club at the "Y" held its last dance, It was very well attended and the news that it was closing hit some of the members pretty hard. Mr. Allar Raegle, who acted as chaperone fo? - the evening, made a closing speech saying that other summer activities caused this step and announced that the club will be reopened next Sep- tember. Now that the club is closed the boys in charge have had time to look for new ideas. With that object in mind they went to London last Sat- urday evening, where they were shown the layout and workings of the famous Teen Town that is held there during the summer months. Other trips are planned and it seems that if all the new ideas are put into affect, next year's club will be a big success. 3 -- DAYS -- 3 STARTING MONDAY House For Sale 2-family brick, one vacant, private entrance, heavy wiring, furnace (water system), corner lot, 7 rooms and sunroom, near Collegiate.
