THE STRATFORD MIRROR Friday, May 31, 1946 NLR cif} . By FRANK FILMAN The Ontario censorship board will require theatres to indicate in ad- vertising that certain films are "adult entertainment" and leave it up to the parents to act accordingly. Manitoba and Alberta classify films in that way but it seems to have done little to decrease anti- movie agitation. Sometimes it seems that the only way to solve the prob- lem is for the theatre owner to abandon juvenile matinees, But not even that would do. In Britain, where films are graded, a theatre owner refused to admit chil- dren to a program classified as adult although he is not required to do more than advertise the fact. The British have vigorous ideas about freedom. The parents went after the theatre owner until he lift- ed the ban and yielded them the right to ignore or follow the opinion of the censor as to what films their children ought to see. bo Ea * Have you ever thought that you could outshine some of those sup- posed Hollywood stars? Have you ever thought that acting was as easy as rolling off a log? Have you ever thought that anything those screen cuties had you have too, only more and better? Have you ever thought you had Clarke Gable's ears or Van Johnson's boyish grin licked to a frazzle, and could out-Tarzan John- ny Weismuller? Here's your chance to do something about it! RKO Radio has just announced a new scheme whereby anyone wanting a screen test can get one easily, without the tremendous ex- pense involved in a trip to the film capitol. All you have to do is get some friend or acquaintance with a movie camera to take 100 feet of color film of you and mail it to Ben Piazza, RKO Studios, Hollywood, California, and then sit back and wait. Street make-up 'is all you need. Take an outdoor shot walking to- ward the camera for 10 feet, show both profiles and then face the cam- era and "give out." Simple, isn't it? Now don't ever say, "I never had a chance!" * * * The film industry finally wakened to the fact that the actual inventor of the modern-day projector, Thom- as Armat, was forgotten, and honor- ed him at a banquet of the Society of Motion Picture Engineers in New York recently. Armat was the part-time inventor who took his brain-child, the "Vita- scope', as he called it, to Thomas Alva Edison in 1893. Edison, liking the machine, started the manufac- ture of the projector in his plant, abandoning his Kinetoscope, the peepshow device he had been mak- ing up till then. To exploit the sales of the new invention Edison's name was used exclusively, leading to the misapprehension that he was the actual inventor. At no time did he claim to have invented the project- or but an admiring public credited him with it. * * * Bing Crosby will drive to Jasper National Park in the Canadian Rockies from his Elko, Nevada, Besarae.
