Winnipeg, Man., Aug. 9, 1946. -- Crop conditions remain generally good over the whole prairie region, according to the weekly crop report of the Department of Agriculture of, the Canadian National Railways. The weather turned much cooler at the beginning of the week and frost damage is reported from a number of points in the northern parts. Some hail damage is reported but it has affected only a relatively small area. If conditions remain norm for the rest of the season at least an average crop seems assured on the prairies. a Atlas Oil Burners -- Douro Pumps, PHONE 70R-2- Chesterfields and Occasional Chairs Phone 579. Ship's Bells For Sale Two hundred and sixty-six bells from ships of the Royal Navy are being offered for sale by the Admir- alty. Prices range from 10 pounds to 2 pounds, the average being about 4 pounds; and weights vary from 149 pounds to 3 pounds, Applications for the bells should be made by the persons actually wish- ing to acquire them and should be addressed to the Director of Stores, Admiralty, London, S.W.1, England. They must be received not later than 30th September, 1946, and should not be accompainied by cheques. The bells will not be sold until October, 1946, to allow ap- plications from officers overseas to be considered, and applicants will then be informed of the result of their application, and if successful, the method of payment. MAKE-UP TECHNIQUE HAS INFLUENCED MOVIES "Ma, I want to be in the movies." That innocent-sounding phrase, uttered before the advent of sound pictures, was likely to shock and alarm the average mother. It's a different story today. High- ly-pleased mama is likely to grab daughter, a few suitcases, and make for the nearest Trans-Continental to the West coast. According to Perc Westmore, War- ner Bros. wizard, it's make-up that's responsible for the radical change in attitude. "Before Warners developed talk- ing pictures," said Perc, "many of the actresses resembled painted hus- sies. Today they're un-lacquered, natural American beauties." The youthful appearing pioneer, whose name and that of his brothers has become synonymous in Holly- wood with the ultimate in makeup and hairdressing, has virtually rev- olutionized movie makeup. within the past twenty years. : Westmore's creation of a regular makeup and hairdressing depart- ment on the Warner Bros. lot two decades ago corrected the unnatural, Sometimes ludicrous effects. In pre- talkie days, actors did their own makeup, and it was often poor. This ._¢created an insurmountable problem for the cameraman, director and de- veloping lab. Perc kept charts on every player. He developed the revolutionary hair-lace wig that*can be combed off the forehead. When sound came in, he worked (in conjunction with the Academy of Arts and Sciences) upon devising panchromatic make- up to absorb all the colorings in the new lights used on the sets. This made the cameraman's lot easier, for it reduced reflections, accentuated features, and made the screen actor more natural and attractive. Perc uses psychology too. "The natural feeling of a person has to complement his makeup." he declared. "Good makeup induces good acting, because if an actor knows he looks well, he'll give a better performance." Westmore admits that Hollywood has made many mistakes in makeup. The spit curl was one. The Ubangi mouth and thinly-plucked eyebrows were others. Pere credits Warner Bros. for es- sential aid in the creation of his corrective makeups. "They've given us the facilities, spared no expense, and allowed us free execution. As a result, the whole industry as well as the average American woman has benefitted." In 1935 the five Westmores open- ed a veritable temple of beauty on Hollywood's Sunset Boulevard. They call it the House of Westmore, and it's probably the most elaborate beauty salon in the world. Mirrored walls show a client, as she leaves, what Westmore experts have done for her. One entire floor is devoted to coiffures. There are separate de- partments for men and children, but it is the ladies, both professional and in private life, that the boys cater to. Very often you can see a famous glamor girl leaving the establish- ment with her hair under a net and her evening makeup applied by an expert. Reaching home, she'll mere- ly step into an evening gown and be ready to go. Make Life Easy..
