In the morning the Soap-Box Derby drew a fine crowd to see the youthful racing-car drivers with their custom-built machines. Many a> baby-carriage wheel was in evidence | on models of front-wheel drive and rear-end steering. Only once did it look as though the wrecking truck | would be needed. At times it was hard to distinguish the Optimists from the drivers. But no protests. were received from any of the en-. tries, and we hear that George, Wyndham will enter a car next year if he can qualify on the age limit. In the afternoon ,the motorcycle races at the Fair Ground were quite good even though delayed in start- ing by the rain. On Tuesday the schools opened with a good crop of students. A few changes in the teaching staff have been made and most noticeable will be the absence of Miss R. J. Me- Queen from the Collegiate, where her influence has been deeply in- grained in the students for many years. Miss McQueen will remember the excellent standing of this school when she first taught there, along with Mr. Mayberry, Mr. Spune and Miss Marty. The Upper School re- sults for last year were a sad sight indeed, with all but a handful of students obtaining a grade of "C" (50-59) which would have failed them a few years ago. It is the duty of the board of education to see what happened, and apply the prop- er remedy. A comparison with other collegiates is most unfavorable to this school. In the line of sports the games of 'softball last week between Fishers, of Galt, and the Kroehler Girls were superb entertainment. Our Kroehler Girls are a genuine asset to the city and deserve great praise. The Housing Enterprises develop- ment at Strudley Park has taken a turn for the better this last few days and several frameworks of houses are now up. We hope that the con- tractors will keep forging ahead as the houses are badly needed now. A sore touch to the local builders is that this firm has high priorities and, to see large piles of materials stacked up at the Park, while indi- vidual houses and apartments are being held back from completion for lack of a few items, is most dis- turbing. An interesting advertisement ap- | peared in the local daily on Sept. 4. Under the heading "Wanted to Buy" there appeared: THREE YOUNG LADIES with good referernces, etc., etc. Wonder what they are going at these days? Wouldn't mind getting. a late model, with a good paint job. But then, as father used to say, "It isn't the original expense, its the upkeep." There's the legal angle to consider too. Might be charged with bigamy, or would it be bigonometry? A fool and his money are some narty. MIRACLES OF THE MIND MENDER Of all the great works of healing, AS I SEE IT (Continued from page 1) crimes of this century. Man pretty, well messed himself up--with his depression, which he cured only by going to suicidal war. If whole nations condone big crimes, the in- dividual follows suit. . A FEW MONTHS BEFORE THE war ended, an English woman psy- chologist, then in Canada, predicted that the world would see a wave of crime--and that ex-soldiers would be found among the most frequent offenders. Dr. Grace Pailthorpe's argument was that the human sys- tem can stand only so much strain --and that, when subjected to too much, the pressures break out in all sorts of mental aberrations. Subsequent events have proved that the lady doctor was all too cor- rect in her forecast. Perhaps we should think of the human family as one in which we are each joined |' to every other human being on earth by a system of imaginary wires. The shocks and strains which originate in one part of that family -- when transmitted through the _ invisible wires -- may break out somewhere else. * * * I DO NOT BELIEVE THERE CAN be much change for the better in the field of human habits, and per- sonal behaviour, until the world abolishes war and unemployment. But in not a single level of life -- neither among the workers, farmers, the most exciting, touching and dra-| nor, indeed, among those few big matic is that of the Mind Menders capitalists that I meet -- do I find who operate in a government hos- pital at Staten Island, New York. Paul Gallico traces some of the most remarkable cases of rehabilitation by them in The American Weekly, with this Sunday's issue of The De- troit Sunday Times. An elevator operator, off for the day, was replaced by a girl who on her first trip brought the elevator to an abrupt stop. 'Did I stop too quick?" she asked the passengers. "Oh, no indeed," coyly replied the little old lady in one corner of the ear. "I always wear my bloomers around my ankles." the human rats that seem to get themselves depicted in books.
