After much search such a bruin was found, but the owner wanted a mere $30,000 for the performance. Even DeMille couldn't go for that and the scene is out. bd * * Alexis Smith has ordered a cara- van trailer for a motor trip she plans to make shortly to her native Can- ada. .. Sholem Asch's new novel of racial conflict in New York's East Side, "East River", has been pur- chased by Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer for screening. . . In "Golden Ear- rings' Marlene Dietrich, who por- trays a gypsy, hammers Ray Mil- land on the head with a frying pan and he is hoping he doesn't lose an- other week-end! . . . Joyce Reynolds, the original screen "Janie", has re- sumed her career after a long retire- ment for marriage and motherhood. - .- Helmut Dantine, who is at pres- ent portraying one of the leads in Quebec Production's "The Strong- hold", being made in Montreal, is considered to be Hollywood's fore- most exponent of the heel-clicking art. Errol Flynn is "clicker" number two. » * * "The Razor's Edge", a picture that cost $4,000,000 to make, will be shown all over the world with either added sub-titles or dialogue in 23 alien languages, including Hindu- stani. .. Fred MacMurray has pur- chased a story, "Innocent Affair" which he will make independently and star in himself. . . Van Heflin and Lana Turner will team up for "Green Dolphin Street" ... Tech- nicolor pictures of the actual drop- ping of the atom bomb on Nagasaki will be released for public viewing sometime towards the end of the year. ... An interesting note from Hollywood is that a picture recently finished eight days ahead of sched- ule and saved the company $128,000 by doing so--figured at the rate of $16,000 per day. Time is really money in the film city. * * * Brian Donlevy is said to be inter- ested in making a picture of the ex- ploits of Admiral Richard Byrd from the book "Snowblind" by Charles Schnee . . . Henry Fonda has been chosen to star in the screen version of John O'Hara's famous book, "Ap- pointment in Samara" ... It cost 20th-Century Fox a total of $275,000 for the screen rights to "The Late George Apley." A flat sum of $110, 000 was paid and the balance was computed on the length of the Broadway run of the stage play, which was 80 weeks. The longer the run the more it cost, until finally a record price was set, topping '"For- ever Amber", the previous high, by $75,000.
