Movie censor boards in different countries hold widely divergent views on what should be cut out of a picture and what should be left in. For instance, the British censors passed "Wicked Lady" as perfectly 'all right for showing, but when it reached the U.S.A. the Johnston Office (the American censorship board) decided that the gowns of the women were too low cut in front and many of the scenes had to be re-made. Now the shoe is on the other foot. In "The Private Affairs of Bel Ami" there is a scene showing a bedroom, and, inasmuch as there were no twin beds in Paris in 1880, the time and setting of the scene, the studio want- ed to use a single bed. The John- ston Office said okay, but this time the British censor said no. So to save the time and expense of making two versions twin beds were used. * * * "Strange Holiday", which is due to be released shortly, was originally made for an automobile manufactur- ing company four years ago. It stars Claude Rains and Gloria Holden and was written and directed by Arch Obler. Although made for exhibition to employees only, the story is also straight entertainment and the com- pany is releasing the picture without having to pay the strictly high- bracket salary of the stars and writ- er ... Winnie Churchill's daughter Sarah is being screened in Rome for the title role in the "Life of Sarah Bernhardt" ... and rumour has it that a studio is plotting a biographic- al show with the former: 'America's Sweetheart", Mary Pickford. * * * This is typically Hollywood. A model named Mary Stuart was sign- ed by a studio because she was sup- posed to be the "model with the most beautiful figure in New York'. She was assigned to a very nice role in "The Personal Touch', but--here is the irony--she plays the part of a girl confined to an iron lung and all that can be seen of the "beautiful figure" is her face and neck ...A deal is reported to have been con- By FRANK FILMAN cluded in which Laurence Olivier and Vivien Leigh will come to Hol- lywood to star in a movie version of "Cyrano de Bergerac." * 1 * Esther Williams has finished "This Time for Keeps" and will retire from the screen until after the birth of her expected baby .*%. . Another who has retired for a like event is Betty Hutton. Her baby is due any time now and she expects to return to the screen early in December in a specialty number in "Variety Girl" ... And speaking of that super-spec- tacle "Variety Girl', latest reports have Ray Milland, William Bendix, and Barbara Stanwyck added to the cast, making, in all, over 40 top-cal- ibre stars in the picture. Inviting a friend to his wedding anniversary, MacTavish explained: "We're on the seventh floor, Apart- ment D. Just touch the button with your elbow." "And why should I use my el- bow?" "Well, for heaven's sake, you're not coming empty-handed, are you?"
