Simple Method by Which Obstinacy was Effectually Cured. ©" Kansas City Star. .A skinny, ill-fed, discontented me anarchistic horse had come to the con- clusion that it had hauled ite load far enough and that it would defy the overbearing master and go no farther. The result was a blockade of the street, caused by a balky horse. As is nsual in such cases a crowd gathered to dis- cuss the situation. Everyone took a hand at trying to lead the horse, but it planted its fore feet firmly and re- fueed to be budged. Various sugges- tions were offered to assist its locomo- tion, but few of them were tried. The comedian of the crowd offered the time- worn suggestion that a fire be built under it, but it fell flat and no one even smiled. In the crowd was a well-dressed man in a silk hat and natty overcoat. He had observed in silence all the ways and means for moving the obstirate horse. At length he stepped forward and said :-- , 'Let me try. Who's gota piece of string 7' A small boy went into his pockets and produced the desired ar- ticle, a good stout length of packing twine. "Now get me a short stick. and we'll soon get this horse out of the way," said the man. The smal] boy also produced astick. The crowd gazed stupidly and wonderingly at the preparations, although those whose suggestions had been rejected smiled satirically. The man in the silk hat had tied one end of thefstring to the stick and then began to wind the otier end areund the horse's ear. The horse hung his head and looked obstinate. As the string began to tighten the horse woke up and tried to jerk bis head away. The further the string wound the un- easier thefhorse grew. wind had been taken the stick was bridle.
