John Gray, one of Perth County's oldest residents, died Sunday, June 16th, 1918, at Stratford. Mr. Gray was born in Brechin, Forfarshire, Scotland, on March 10, 1830, Twenty four years later he was married to Miss Margaret Wilcocks, who was born just a week later in the game town. Ten days after their marriage they were on the way to Canada and after a very long and stormy voyage landed, going immediately to Hamilton. In Hamilton, Mr. Gray, followed his trade, that of a mas- ter mechanic in stone cutting, under the direction of the late Jobn Whyte, of Mitchell. It is interesting to note that Mr. Gray cut the corner stone of the pioneer railway bridge in Stratford in 1857. When the land in Elma township was thrown on the market in the fall of 1854, Mr. Gray purchased lot 21, concession 10, and in 1855 moved there to live the life of a dauntless pioneer farmer. Wher he went there a blazed trail was all the guide to-show the way and for 30 years he resided there with his family, retiring af the end of that time to Stratford. The story of the life of Mr. Gray is that of the old pioneers of Perth, who faced hardships, which are inconceivable to many today because they have no conception of what the settlers in those early days had to face.
