Select Poetry. The Student. RURAL youth, calm and sedate, Whose spirit was insatiate, oil'd on from early morn till late In search of knowledge ; With patience well the task he bore, And daily added to his store, Nor favored with the classic lore, Or rules of college. He from the book of nature drew, Which widely opened to his view, And thus his mind in knowledge grew--- From true devotion ; With piercing eye and mind intent He scanned the shining firmament--- His heart was filled with discontent And wild emotion. His thoughts were brilliant, wildly free, Like billows on the stormy sea--- Clothed in poetic majesty, And sweetly flowing ; Augean stables hove in sight, To cleanse them was his souls delight, And wield the mighty sword of Right! "Wrong overthrowing. Vain sons of opulence and pride To him the critic's lash applied, And strove to turn his views aside-- To check ambition : Their feeble efforts all were spurned, The fire of Genius brighter burned, And soon he won among the learned, A high position. Now from the pinnacle of fame Beams forth in brilliancy his name, Who show'd both high and low their shame, In song and story: True Genius never turns aside, Drifting adown the favored tide, Nor worships vain and empty pride, But Rient and Guory. Joun H. Weaver, ----- HMiscellancous tems. In one county in Maryland there are seven hundred acres of Straw- berries, and two persons in that State have each one hundred and twenty acres, and three others one hundred acres each in straw-berry fields. Mixed liquors are called " grog" because Admiral Vernon, who was the first to mix his sailors' allowance with water, was nicknamed " Old Grog" from his wearing a grogram coat; and this name (grog) was given to the adulterated liquor he compelled the seamen of the fleet to drink. Om near Niagara River.--Dig- ging for oil is going on at Pekin, | about ten miles from the Suspension Bridge, on the American _ side. About four hundred feet have been -sunk, and the indications are that oil will be found soon. If so, have we not a right to presume that oil will also be found on the Canadian side of the Niagara.-- Hamilton Times. Hon. Francis: Hinexs.--From a Demerara paper we learn that the Hon. Francis Hincks is likely to be removed to Jamaica. It would ap- pear that Mr. Hincks is not very popu- lar in the colony over which he now presides, and. that is supposed to be the cause of his being removed to a new field, so that he may have a chance of redeeming his lost popu- larity. Presence or Minp.--The famous Lord Chancellor, Sir Thomas More, once resided at Chelsea, and attached to his mansion was a gatehouse, ac- cording tothe old fashion. From the top of this gatehouse a very pleasent and delightful prospect was obtained. His lordship was in the habit of re- creating himself in this place with his little dog. It happened that an insane man got up the stairs on one occasion when his lordship was there, and coming-to him eried' Leap, Tom, leap," offering Sir Thomas violence, and attempting to throw him over the battlements. The Lord Chancellor was a feeble old man, and being in his robe, he was not able to make any effectual resistance ; but having great presence of mind, said, ' Let us first throw this little dog over.' The insane man threw the dog down. 'Pretty sport," said the Lord Chan- cellor; " go down and bring him up and try again." Whilst the madman went down for the dog, his Lordship made fast the door of the stairs, and called for help; and but for his ready wit he would in all probability have lost his life. Warnine 10 tHE Sex.--The law against obtaining husbands under false pretenses, passed by the English Parliament in 1700, enacts: " That all women, of whatever rank, pro- fession; or degree, who shall, after this aét; impose upon, seduce, and betray into. matrimony any of his majesty's subjects, by virtue of scents, paints, cosmetic washes, artificial teeth, false hair, iron stays, bolstered hips, or high-heeled shoes, shall incur the penalty of the law now in force against witchcraft and like misde- _meanors;and the marriage under such circumstances, upon conviction of the offending parties, shall be null and void."
