COUNTY OF PERTH HERALD Select Poetry. Winter Wind. There's snow-white garment o'er all the earth, And the winds are out in their boisterous mirth : _ here's a witching glow and a wondrous light, For the moon rides high 'mong the stars to-night. There's a frosty breath on the northern blast, And it chills the blood as it hastens past ; While he sings his fierce and exaltent song As he soars aloft on his pinions strong. He hurries him on o'er the rivers breast, siles that brought them to the earth. Hollow skulls lie contiguous to hemi- spheres of exploded shells. The sial- low graves rises here and there above the grass, sometimes in rows, and sometimes alone, or scattered at ir- regular intervals. Through the thin layer of soil that hides the nameless hero who gave his life for his country, one seesthe pro- truding ribs where the rain has wash- ed their covering, a foot ar an arm reaching out beyond its earthen bed ; and once [ saw one of the long sleep- with him. His own words to this in- timate friend were 'I have tried to act as if I did not feel it, but it has shortened my life.' How little can he judged from men's outside ! How un- wise is the bitterness of theological controversy! How cruel to shorten any good man's days by needless as- perity! How sad the present reflec- tions of those who a generation ago, ursued Whately as if he were *an enemy of the truth!'"
