NOUSEWIFE HUNG MATTRESS OUT OF THE WINDOW. THE -- The Savings of Years Dropped Into the Hands of a Dishonest Neighbor, Although the ordinary savings bank has its drawbacks, it iS also true that it has its advantages over some hiding 'plhices favored by frugal wives. 'This {truth has been rather rudely brought home to Mme, Marguerile Schenk, who lives In a modest apartment in the Rue Leibnitz, Pavis, France, Like the majority of French women, Mine. Schenk is the economist of her household. Her husband is. all very Well when it comes to earning the money, but it was his wife who held the purse strings and out of his small salary had managed to accumulate a Surprisingly large bag of savings. Not having an overgreat belief ine the hon- esty of others, and having a@ very 'sat- isfactory faith in her own eare and watchfulness, sho kept her savings dur- ing all the years of her married life {n & constantly growing pouch hidden uway IN THE FOLD OF A MATTRESS, Of days she could keep her eyes almost aiways upon it and at night her slum- bers were more peaceful, knowing, as she did, that her fortune reposed safely beneath her. A couple of weeks ago Mme, Schenk had an attack of spring-cleaning fever. Every husband knows what that meins, Mme. Schenk had it in its most violent form. Everything in the little aparl- ment was literally pulled up by the roots and -submilted to no end of dust- ing, beating. wiping and washing. Among the articles thus treated was the mattress in whieh lay the faniily hoard, amounting 4o $12,000 in Russian Ponds and $750 in French bank notes, The Utility of the Bicycle Was never more assured than al the present time. ness man, the doctor, the curate, the the Jacks of all trades ride the wheel, limo and money and puts you on slore or into town, for a hurry The busi- leacher, the farmer, The bicycle saves the highway to economy. the wheel solves the problem, Dy cushion Now, Mme. Schenk had no court be low in' which to beat it, so forgetting for the moment the bonds and the bank notes, she hung the mattress out of hee window and belabored it with all the vigor and enthusiasm which the spring- cieaning fever always develops in a healthy woman. Next door to the Sehenks lived a stonecutter, August Hommet by name, and his pretty young wife. Now, it so happened that while Mme. Schenk was walloping her mattress, Hommet was sianding directly beneath, day-dream- ing of the time when he would be rich and live in fashionable apartments. Suddenly there dropped down in front of him, seemingly from the heavens, a fat bag. When he stooped and picked it up, opened it and gazed upon its con- tents, he was sure that it CAME FROM HEAVEN, For his eyes fell upon French bank notes to the value of $750 and a pile of Russian bonds. The latter were-much the richer prize, being worth $12,000, but to Hommel, who knew nothing of foreign investments, they were merely paper covered with printed hierogty- phics. Of the value of the bank notes, however, he was fully aware, and wast- ed no time tracing their source to ony pleace nearer terra firma, He hurriedly returned with this find to his own apart- ments and told his wife of the mira- culous gift he had received. They im- mediately packed up their fevy belong- ings and moved to better equarters. in the Rue Championnet. In the next few days Hommet gave evidence that poverty. had robbed the world of a prince of spenders. He spent the $750 in bank noles with a hand so lavish that it would have made Monte Cristo himself turn green with envy. 4 stock of fine wines was ordered and the stonecutler and his wife did not give 't an opportunity of accumulating the cobwebs of old age in the cellar, hut drank it all as soon as it arrived. Fur- nilure, new clothes and jewelry speed- ily followed, and, as a final effort, the couple invited all their relatives who lived near enough to a grand feast. Meanwhile, in the Rue Leibnitz con- Sslernation had had ifs reign and re- morse and regret had followed. . After coinpleling her cleaning, Mme. Schenk had bethought herself of her bonds and her bank notes. With the pale face of fear and the cold perspiration of appre- hension, the good wife repaired in a hurry to the mattress, which now re- posed once more on the bed. Search as she might in its folds, she could not find THE PRECIOUS BAG. A trip to the street below was equally fruitiess, So she returned to her rooms in despa'r to await the homecoming of her husband. When that worthy arriv- ed he had a whole lot to say that is not printable, and then dee:ded to call in a lawyer. Accordingly, M."Hamard, a well-known Parisian attorney, was sent fer and the situation explained to him. Among the other undoubted talents. M Hamard seems (0: possess. a keen seent for a trail that would make hin a serious rival ef Sherlock Holmes, At any rate, afler a few preliminary in- quires in the neighborhood, he made straight for the swagger new apart- ments of the departed stonéculter and his charming wife. With an eye for the dramatic, he timed his arrival at the apartment in the Rve Champ'onnet well, for he reached there just when the feast to the relatives was at its height, With the delicacy and politeness which makes arrest one of the pleasures of French life, he interrupted the gayeties and took Hommet and his weeping wife cf to the nearest police station. There they both confessed and the former handed over to his captor a 50-centime ten-cent) piece. the surviving portion of the $750. Not considering them of any value, Hommel and his guests haa amused themselves by lighting their cigareltes with the Russian bonds. Japdnese Red Festival to Keep Away Epidemic. There is an epidemic of smallpox in some sections of Tokio, and an ancient smallpox festival is being very gener- ally revived by those who fear the dis- ease, It is thus described by the Japan Times: "Those infected with or appre- hensive of smallpox make a sort of table, four feet by two fect, which, cov- ering it with red cloth, they deposit in the parlor. Upon it they heap bags of rice, on top of which red goheil--peculi- arly cut paper, considered by the vul- gar. to be sacred--is placed. Th's forms a sort of temporary shrine, before which the family kneel and worship for twelve days, after which period ali the rice and other articles and offerings are cast away, either in. the river or by the roadside, to be touched only by dogs and mend'cants. Simultaneously with this, the family, especially those infect- ed with smallpox, bathe themselves in red colored hot water, which is pro- duced by boiling red beans. The special feature of this practice is the redness of color which characterizes almost ev- erylhing forming part of the festival For twelve days, which is.the term of the festival, people use red colered tow- els, are dressed in red kimonas, and receive no gifts which are not rendered prominent by red. They keep their per- sons as clean as possible. The idea of this peculiar institution would appear to be that the god of smallpox stays for twelve days in one family; so that during his short sojourn they must coax and humor him as much as possible, that he may not leave any disastrous effects behind him."
