7 § peta aed pestis Mie Oi ME aS encanto gc SR SIO Bre ee NERVOUS DISEASES IN THE SPRING Cured by Toning the Blood and Strengthening the Nerves It is the opinion of the best me- dical authorities, after long obser- vation, that nervous diseases are more common and more serious in the spring than at any other time of the year. Vital changes in the system, after long winter months, may cause much more trouble than the familiar spring weakness and weariness from which most people suffer as the result of indoor life, in poorly ventilated and often overheated buildings. Official re- cords prove that in April and May neuralgia, St. Vitus dance, epilepsy and other forms of nerve troubles are at their worst, and that. then, more than any other time, a blood- making, nerve-restoring tonic is needed. The antiquated custom of taking purgatives in the spring is useless, for the system really needs strengthening, while purgatives only gallop through the bowels, leaving you weaker. Dr. Williams' Pink Pills are the best medicine, for they actually make the new, rich, red blood that feeds the starved nerves, and thus cure the many forms of nervous disorders. They cure also such other forms of spring troubles as headaches, poor appetite, weakness in the limbs, as well as remove unsightly pimples and eruptions. In fact they un- failingly bring new health and strength to weak, tired and depress- ed men, women and children. Sold by all medicine dealers or by mail at 50 cents a box or six boxes for $2.50 from The Dr. Wil- liams' Medicine Co., Brockville, Ont. th A ONE-TOED RACE. Dr. R. Clement Lucas in an ad- dress at the Royal College of Sur- geons predicted that men might in time become a cne-toed race. "The little toe," he said, "has already lost one of its extensor tendons, and in quite an appreciable percentage of cases one of its plexor tendons js absent ulso. On the other hand the great toe has undergone extra- ordinary develooment because the inner side of the feot is the first to eatch the centre of gravity in trans- ferring the weight of the body from one foot to the other in walking. If the world goes on long enough -the useless outer toes, being less and less employed, may gradually disappear." yt There is probably more trashy stuff sold in the baking powder line than in any other line. Most of it contains large quantities of alum. To avoid the use of this. dangerous acid, see that all ingredients are plainly stated in English on the package. The words "No Alum"' on the package or in an Ad, is not sufficient. Bacon--Hear vour friend went in- to the bee business last summer. Egbert--He did. Bacon--What luck? Egbert---Oh, just his usual luck. He got stung. Howell--Did you ever want the earth? Powell--Yes, once, when I was fool enough to let a fellow take me up in his airship. Do It Now.--Disorders of the di- gestive apparius should be dealt with at once before complications arise that may be difficult to cope with. The surest remedy to this end and one that is within reach of all, is Parmelee's Vegetable Pills, the best laxative and sedative on the market. Do not delay, but try them now. One trial will convince anyone that they are the best sto- mach regulator that can be got. "T see one of our big corporations is going to do something for its old wlerks." 'Good enough! What form will it take?' "Well, after a man has been with them twenty- five years, they're going to give him a gold stripe on his sleeve." . . ° Skin« Tortured Little Ones Motherst Are your little ones suffering from itching, burning eczemas, or other torturing, disfiguring skin troubles? Are ou, yourself, worn out with ong, sleepless nights and cease- less anxiety in caring for them ? Then you should know that, in most cases, a warm bath with Cuticura Soap and a gentle application of Cuti- cura Ointment bring immediate re~ lief, the little sufferers sleep, tired, fretted mothers rest, and falls on distracted households. Although Cuticura Soap and Ointment are sold by druggists and dealers everywhere, @ a to "Cuticura," vay 2M, Boston, . 8, A., will secure & liberal sampte of -- with 32-p, book on the skin and scalp, an _ treatment of their affections, | eS aE LOVE MARRIAGES, 'Like most lady novelists, Miss Marie Corelli is a firm believer in marrying for love," said a literary Miss Marie Corelli. woman. "I argued and wrangled about love matches with her one whole day in her old-fashioned Stratford home, but she rather got the better of me, at the end, with an epigram:! "'She who marries for love,' Miss Corelli said, 'enters heaven with her eyes shut. She who mar- ries without love enters hell with them open.' "' " A RELIABLE MEDICINE FOR YOUNG CHILDREN Baby's Own Tablets are a safe medicine for all little ones. They are guaranteed by a government analyst to be absolutely free from opiates and other harmful drugs-- that is why so many mothers will give their baby nothing else in the way of medicine. Concerning them Mrs. John Thompson, Coutts, Alta., says: "I have given my baby, when needed, Baby's Own Tablets and think they are the best remedy for constipation I have ever used. I would not be without them in the house.'"' The Tablets are sold by medicine dealers or by mail at 25 cents a box from The Dr. Williams' Medicine Co., Brockville, Ont. ig] "WONDERFUL WALKER." Noted for His Learning and Hard Work. Those who think they have a great deal to do may profitably consider the facts that Mr. Eric Robertson, in his "Wordsworth and the Eng- lish Lake Country,"? has collected concerning a clergyman who lived more than a century ago. People of a far busier age will not dispute this man's right to the title of '"'wonderful," given him in West- moreland, and will agree with his fellow dalesmen that he was, in- deed, of the "strodner fowk." The Rev. Robert Walker, who be- came minister and schoolmaster of Buttermere, was noted for long work and hard work. He wrote .his own sermons, and did duty twice every Sunday; on week-days he rose between three and four. Besides keeping the school, he plowed, planted, shep- herded on the Fells, clipped or salved, mowed in hay-time, with scythe. in harvest-time with sickle, all for hire. In the winter evenings he spun and fashioned his own clothes, knit- ted or mended his own stockings, and made his own boots from lea- ther of his own tanning. When he found leisure for a walk, he usually came home with stores of wool gath- ered from trees and hedges. He was doctor, lawver and busi- ness expert to his parish, for he drew up all wills, conveyances and other covenants, balanced accounts, and often accompanied farmers to market as general adviser. From Buttermere, Walker went to Tover, and after his marriage he settled at Leathwaite, where, on a clerical endowment of five pounds a year, he acted not only as clergy- man, but in all manner of other capacities for sixty-seven years. There he taught school in the chureh, using the communion table for the writing lessons, and spin- ning as he taught.. He was learned in fossils and astronomy, collected butterflies, and studied the proper- ties of the atmosphere. Every Sunday, upon the long table at which he has been deserib- ed, as sitting with a child on_ his knee, were served messes of broth for the refreshment of members of his congregation who came from a distances and took seats as part of his household. He had twelve chil- dren, all of whom he settled in life. In 1802, in his ninety-third year, he died--worth two thousand pounds. His gross income had never exceed: ed forty pounds a year. "He was," said his: neighbors, 'van of the most strodner fowk as ivver lived--if he hedn't hed to > 32 serat sae sair for a livin'. Shilol's Gure QUICKLY STOPS COUGHS, CURES COLDS, MEALS THE THROAT AND LUNGS. 25 CENTS eee ee ee WHAT HE DID. "My friend," said the solemn man, "have you ever done aught to make the community in which you live the better for your living in it?' "I have done much, sir,"' replied the other humbly, "to puri- fy the homes of my fellow-beings." "Ah," continued the solemn man with a pleased air, '"'vou distribute tracts?' 'No; I clean carpets !"' HONEST TEA IS THE BEST POLICY. In order to find out to what ex- tent the different food products are used by its millions of readers, the "Woman's World' (circulation over 2,000,000 copies. monthly) re- cently inaugurated a most interest- ing coupon canvass, et One of the questions propounded was, 'What tea do you use?" and the replies received demonstrate that Lipton's Tea is the most popu- lar of all package teas, showing its sale to be double that of the nearest competitor and consider- ably over one hundred per cent. more than the next two mentioned brands taken together. Surely Honest Tea is the Best Policy. is A GRAPHIC DEMON STRATION, Mr. Jones Showed His Wife How He Fell Down Cellar Steps. Mr. Jones believed that no one need ever fall down. It was pure carelessness, he said, Any one who walked straight, and did not dawdle around, was in no danger of losing his balance. He said: so to Mrs. Jones many times, but she had only smiled in a provoking way. One bitter cold January morning he changed his mind. Everything outdoors had a coating of ice. The path leading from the barn to the house was smooth as glass and slanted treacherously on either hand. On one side of it was an old cellar, whera the house had once stood. Jones was coming from the barn, after doing the morning chores, with a pail of milk in each hand. He was just opposite the cel- lar when--zzzt!--out flew his feet and down he went on his back. The next instant he had slid in a shower of milk over the edge of the cellar hole, and landed on ithe bottom with a thump that fairly took away his breath. He looked around in a dazed way for a moment, and then crawled to his feet. After making reasonably sure that none of his bones were broken, he climbed out and went limping into the house to tell his wife. "Matilda! Matilda!" he called. "Why, Hi- "Come out here !" Obediently she came. ram, what has happened? Are you hurt?' she exclaimed, startled. '"Yes,"? answered Jones. "I fell down that old cellarway. Come here and I'll show you." Mrs. Jones followed her husband gingerly. 'See, Matilda," he said, as he reached the spot and turned, "I stood right here like this when--' Once more Jones's feet flew up, and in precisely the same manner as before he landed in the bottom of the cellar. Silence reigned while Mrs. Jones gazed at the spot where her husband had stood. Then she saw his head appearing over the top of the bank. "Hiram," she said, "you needn't explain any further. I understand exactly how it was done." But Hiram's answer was a thor- oughly ill-tempered grunt. DO acy TEA AND COFFEE HURTS One in Three. Tt is difficult to make people be- lieve that tea and coffee are a poi- son to at least one person out of every three, but people are slowly finding it out, although thousands of them suffer terribly before they discover the fact. . A New York hotel: man says: "Each time after drinking coffee I became restless, nervous and ex- cited, so that I was unable to sit five minutes in one place, was also inclined to vomit and suffered from loss of sleep, which got worse and worse. "A lady said that perhaps coffee was the cause of my trouble, and suggested that I try Postum. (Tea is just as harmful as coffee because it contains caffeine, the same drug found in coffee). I laughed at the thought that coffee hurt me, but she insisted so hard that I finally had some Postum made. I have been using it in place of coffee ever since, for I noticed that all my for- mer nervousness and irritation dis- appeared. I began to sleep perfect- ly, and the Postum tasted as good or better than the old coffee, so what was the use of sticking to a beverage that was injuring me? "One day on an excursion up the country I remarked to a young lady friend on her greatly improved appearance. She explained that some time before she had quit using coffee and taken Postum. She had gained a number of pounds and her former palpitation of the heart, humming in the ears, trembling of the hands. and legs and other dis- agreeable feelings had disappeared. She recommended me to quit cof- fee and take Postum and was verv much surprised to find that I had already made the change. "She said her brother had also received great benefits from leay- ing off coffee and taking on Pos- tum." "Thete's a reason." . Ever read the above letter? A new one appears from time to time. They aro genuine, true, and full of human interest. Lf] A DISCOVERY. "What good do you suppose the discovery of the South Pole has done ?"' "J don't know exactly. He Suffered Tortures and the Doe- tor Failed to Give Relief, but Three Boxes Cured Him. Rutter Station, Ont., April 8 (Special).--"'I got perfect results from Dodd's Kidney Pills." So says Mr. Sam Mallette of this place. And he has a reason. "My sickness started from a strain,' Mr. Mallette continues, "and for a year I did not know a well day. My sleep was broken and unrefreshing, my appetite was fit- ful and my limbs would swell. "Then rheumatism set in and neuralgia, backache, headache and heart trouble added to my tortures. I was attended to by a doctor, but he did me no lasting good. "Finally, when Bright's Disease had me in' its grasp, I decided to try Dodd's Kidney Pills, and after taking three boxes, I was as well as ever I was in my life. I have had no pain since and advise all my friends who suffer from kidney dis- ease to take Dodd's Kidney Pills and be cured," Mr. Mallette's case shows what neglected kidney disease will result in and what splendid results Dodd's Kidney Pills give. Sos a ee MYSTERY OF BIRD-FLIGHT. A curious fact concerning birds is that the tip of the wing moves at practically the same speed in every species. This is 650 feet per minute, or nearly 7% miles per hour. Whe- ther it is the tiny wren, or the huge stork, the rule holds good, and even the bee comes within it. Thus the bee has a wing only a quarter-inch long, the sparrow's wing is four inches, and the stork's twenty- seven. But the bees wing beats 11,400 times in a minute, the spar- row's 720, and the stork's only 105 times. If you multiply together the length of the wing and the number of beats you will get almost exactly the same result in the three cases namely, stork, 2,835; bee, 2,850; sparrow, 2,880. But if ever a ma- chine is made to fly like a bird it will have to develop far more ener- gy than these figures stand for. A bird's energy of flight is not so great as is supposed. Although such skilful fliers when aloft, many birds cannot rise from level ground. La WOMEN NEED GIN PILLS. Port Dufferin, N. 8. "I was troubled with Kidney Diseases for several years. Brides in Japan follow the same custom which prevails in the West- ern world, that of wearing white at the wedding ceremony, at least dur- ing a part of it. But the signifi- cance attached to the choice of this color is quite different on the two sides of the world. The Japanese bride is dressed first in resplendent garments of white silk, the sleeves of the cos- tume usually being about three feet in length, while the sash, an im- portant feature, measures about eleven feet in length. But white, as the Oriental Re- view explains, is the mourning col- or in Japan. and the bride, leaving her parents' house, considers her- self dead in the sense that she will never return alive, perferring death to divorce, and in conse- quence wearing a white costume, After the exchange of cups of sake with the bridegroom, which is the most important part of the wed- ding ceremony, the bride changes her costume to a red one. This is called iromaoshi (changing color). Red is supposed to have a purify- ing power, and perhaps clears the minds of the parties of all associa- tions of mourning. This is the origin of the Japan- ese custom of using white costumes at weddings, but many people in modern Japan do not any longer have time to bother their heads with these questions of color, and simply go ahead and marry ac- cording to the accepted custom, with no thought of what the colors signify, % A WONDERFUL DISCOVERY. An eminent scientist, the other day, gave his opinion that the most wonderful discovery of recent years was the discovery of Zam- Buk. Just think! As soon as a single thin layer of Zam-Buk is ap- plied to a wound or a sore, such in- jury is insured against blood poi- son! Not one species of microbe has been found that Zam-Buk does not kill! Then again. As soon as Zam- Buk is applied to a sore, or a cut, or to skin disease, it stops the smarting. That is why children are such friends of Zam-Buk. Mothers should never forget this. Again. As soon as Zam-Buk is applied to a wound or to a diseased part, the cells beneath the skin's surface are so stimulated that new healthy tissue is quickly formed. This forming of fresh healthy tissue from below is Zam-Buk's secret of healing. The tissue thus formed is worked up to the surface and liter- ally casts off the diseased tissue above it. That is why Zam-Buk cures are permanent. Only the other day Mr. Marsh, of 101 Delorimier Ave., Montreal, called upon the Zam-Buk Co. and told them that for over twenty-five years he had been a martyr to ec- zema. His hands were at one time so covered with sores that he had to sleep in gloves. Four years ago Zam- Buk was introduced to him, and in a few months it cured him. To-day --over three years after his cure of a disease he had for twenty-five years he is still perfectly cured.
